What is Pinterest good for? (I haven't figured it out.)

I'm relatively new to "social networks" in the truest sense of the word. My sister raves about Pinterest, and tried to get me interested, but I'm not seeing any usefulness in it. What is it, what does it do, how does it advance my place in the universe, and who cares? It looks like a bunch of pictures to me. Pretty shallow.

I'm thinking it might be useful for widening exposure to some items I'm selling on Etsy, but don't know. Anyone with hands-on knowledge?

Good point. She’ll know better next time.

I’m sure I’ve seen Pinterest accounts of poetry, quotes, favorite authors, etc.

As a statement of fact...if one has absolutely no ability to make quiche, it’s best to throw in the towel and walk away from the kitchen. The site was once only “by invitation only”. Supposedly, this label made it ‘exclusive’. A club that would never include the likes of us on its guest list.

Would you describe that as post-modern or neo-industrial or upcycled chic? ;-)

How do I use Pinterest? Simple. I have collected salad and slow cooker recipes that I really use. I have a collection of quilt patterns, and I have dozens of watercolor painting demos, that I also use.
In addition I have a folder for dream home floor plans and decorating ideas.
It depends on your interests.

Pinterst has some amusing things like 'American-Themed Parties Around The World'

Foreigners are fascinated by our red solo cups, sports jerseys and marshmallows on a stick (although they don't know to toast them)

Uhhhhh. I would describe it as shabby-shabby.

Sublime, yet eclectic with an aftertaste of currants and ripe pears.

Golf claps to you, sir.

You should create a pinterest board about what Pinterest is good for.

My mom likes it.

She is picture oriented and will get lots of ideas from it.

I am word oriented and to me it is pretty much worthless unless I am looking for a decorating idea. Which happens about once every two years.

There are people who are picture oriented and people who are verbal oriented and never the twain shall meet.

But you can collect things anywhere, in various ways. People used to have recipe files for this.

Why use Pinterest to do this? Is there a reason to make it public?

Most of the “how tos” include a link.

Good idea!

Should it be a bunch of blank photos?

I’ve seen it ll over the net. See something interesting, click on it and see the message: Dear A-Hole you have to be a member to view.

So my daughter conned me into signing up. I did and still do know what it does or what it’s for.

Never signed up but google searches for certain subjects have landed me there many times.

It has been useful for generating ideas, seeing what others have done with certain products, and just wanting to see photos of something you have an interest in. The digital equivalent to buying a bunch of magazines for ideas, such as interior design. I used it most to find examples of Ikea kitchen cabinet configurations and finish work from users of that product in their homes. It’s very useful for research in that way.

My wife is on there all the time. She gets great recipes from it. She also shows me lots of funny stuff like dog shaming, funny t-shirts and really funny memes. She also showed me a lot of stuff posted on there about landscaping projects which helped in the one I did last summer. I would say that I have benefited from my wife’s Pinterest use in multiple ways.
