China’s First Overseas Military Base Nearing Completion (Africa)

The U.S. has increasing security concerns about China’s first overseas military base close to the hub of operations for U.S. Africa Command in Djibouti, a U.S. commander told Congress Thursday.

Marine Gen. Thomas Waldhauser, commander of AfriCom, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that he expected the Chinese base on the Horn of Africa to be operational later this summer.

Without getting specific, Waldhauser said he recently met with Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh “and expressed our concerns about some of the things that are important to us about what the Chinese should not do at that location.”

The Chinese base would be about four miles from the U.S. base at Camp Lemonnier, one of the Pentagon’s largest and most important foreign military installations, where about 3,000 U.S. military personnel and contractors are assigned to Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa.

China has ONE overseas military base and people freak out. The US has How many???

We have to stop being the world’s cop. We’re broke; it is time to face up to that fact, USA. George Washington and the founders would absolutely go nuts if they could see what we’re doing in the world today.

Not so easy. The US needs to EXPAND its military capability. Eliminate junk programs (60% of fed gubmint) and invest in the military. All the good things — computers, rockets, space travel, internet come from the military related research.

Wikipedia:
“In 2001, the Djiboutian government leased the former French military base Camp Lemonnier to the United States Central Command for operations related to Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA). In 2009, Central Command transitioned responsibilities in Africa to AFRICOM. France’s 13th Demi-Brigade of the Foreign Legion is based in Djibouti, but not in Djibouti City. Djibouti hosts France’s largest military presence abroad, Japan’s only foreign base, while China is building its first overseas base ever in the country.[54]”

It does seem a little arrogant for us to be telling Djibouti what China is not allowed to do in their country

Stop this Merry go round please

Building up China was possibly the most idiotic foreign policy disaster of the last 40 years.

Plus the ChiComs have an increasingly close military alliance with Russia. The two have been conducting joint war games since 2005 in obvious prep for war with us and our allies.

“Does Africa have Chinese food?”

It will soon. They’ll probably run out of dogs pretty quick.

I agree we should have a strong, powerful, modern military - to protect the USA... but not to protect the global business interests of every major international business based here, and every flush campaign donor. The USA could stay very safe with a fraction of our international military bases.

"Time for a little regime change."

They're busy working on that very thing right here in the US and not because they give a damn about the Chinese or the Horn of Africa.

Believe me, we do not tell the Djiboutian president what to do. His wife tells us what we can do (through him), and how much we’ll pay them to do it. I’m sure is the same with China.
