On the astro-poop:

Who knows? There may be minerals on Mars for eventual fertilizer use. In the meantime, send ‘em up with a box of Miracle-Gro.

Potatoes are tough. They grow them in Russia, and in Northern Maine. I would have thought Mars was a stretch, though.

Yup.
In the Andean mountains.

Some varieties seem to be sensitive to extended freezing - but others are much better.

I grow lots of taters every year, this spring I have a couple pans in a special place with sprouting (like crazy!!) finger potatoes, gotta get them suckers into the ground!

Oooh, and the pigs will be fatter and more tender due to the reduced gravity.

It’ll be like, like... Martian SuperBacon!!!

The book is interesting reading but it is an exercise in speculation based on conjecture. It starts from assumptions of how much fuel you would need and then calculates outcomes based on arbitrary numbers. It is really excessively real when they could simply reroute the tachyon flow through the warp core and invert the polarity of the positronic matrix, thereby creating a feedback loop that would propel the astronaut and his potatos right into subspace.

See’s candy company used to make a very tasty soft candy called “Irish potato candy” for St Patrick’s Day that looked just like a potato but tasted like heaven should taste to live up to its billing.
