Authorities say twin 97-year-old sisters apparently froze to death after falling down outside a Rhode Island home, one of them while coming to the rescue of the other.
Barrington Police say Jean Haley, of Barrington, and Martha Williams, of East Providence, died Saturday.
Police say the twins had returned to Haley's home with their 89-year-old sister, who is also from Barrington, Friday night after they had dinner together. Some time after the younger sister left, Williams was going to her car. Police say she fell in the driveway.
When Haley went to call for help, authorities say, she tripped on a rug in her garage.
The sisters were found by a neighbor Saturday morning.
They were rushed to the hospital in critical condition and later died.
What a terrible tragedy. Prayers for their loved ones.
I thought there would be a photo. I guess not.
Many twins are said to have a very special bond. They probably kept each other going throughout their long lives.
For the elderly who are in poor health, are fragile ambulators or have Alzheimers, I would recommend some sort of monitor bracelet. Same thing with some autistic children.
For the general able-bodied population, absolutely not.
Sounds like dead weight now...
Sad, but I can’t help but think it was meant to be.
Too sad. No words.
The younger sister, 89!
She’s a baby.
Barrington is one of my favorite towns in R.I.
.
Tragic!
Very sad. I hope they had long happy lives; definitely had outlived the vast majority of their contemporaries. What a freak accident causing them to pass away.
Well this is little consolation but their suffering was relatively short and they died together.
“Williams was going to her car.”

If these women were still driving at age 97, I am impressed.
Regardless, it’s tragic what happened to these two ladies. It’s been extremely cold in New England (and elsewhere) for several days.
Wow, maybe those “help, I’ve fallen & can’t get up” things really are worth it for old folks such as these who are still living independently.
Dreadful. RIP.

97 year olds on the road are danger to themselves and others. They have no business with a car, except as passengers. Sorry.
rugs in houses or garages etc are a no no for older people....
Just wow!
In any event, I’d rather have a 97 y/o driving toward me, than a 16 y/o. Then I can be pretty sure the senior would probably not be texting someone. ;)
I know it sounds cruel but you would have to put a chip in some autistic kids. My grand daughter is autistic and would have it off and gone before you walked away no matter how you attached it.
Exactly (tough and driving at 97). While it sucks, there is something to be said for going out at that age “doing something” rather than being bedridden.
*** maybe those help, Ive fallen & cant get up things really are worth it ***
My friend’s Mom wears one. She tripped over a cat litter box, and broke her hip. She called to her hard of hearing hubby who was watching football in the next room. He never heard her.
Finally, she summoned help with her medical alert necklace.
Within minutes, ambulance arrived. Football watching hubby thought the ambulance was at the wrong house. They informed him his wife was injured, and summoned help. Was he ever shocked.
I had a neighbor break a hip- she was in her fifties. It took her three days to crawl to the phone for help. Sepsis was setting in by then. She died a few weeks later.
