Homeschooling is, and should be, a very individualized thing. Choose what is best for your family and your individual children.

My wife mostly, but I assisted, too, homeschooled my two children from 4th/6th grade to high school graduation. Each had their own interests and style of learning. We used many different curricula; some we started with and dumped later, some we stuck with (the Bible, Abeka, Saxon Math, etc). Try to get hold of used curricula, because you may not end up liking it.

Also, be sure to join a local homeschool group; you will get access to social opportunities, classes, and curricula you'd otherwise miss out on.

My kids are both in their 20's now, and they're doing fine. My son is now a traveling salesman for a pool supplies company, after a short stint as a mechanic (which he ended up not liking; he's a people person). Daughter is presently studying abroad, getting a degree in Bible in preparation for a career as an overseas Christian missionary. Both of them are viewed by older adults as being more mature and well-spoken than many other kids their age, and I attribute this to homeschooling (well, and their mom).

You can do this. You can teach your own successfully.

He isn’t making the decision. They live together in an extended family.
He is semi retired and they both work. He has been involved in her life daily since she was born.

“the parents need to want to.”

THIS.

Not just like the idea, but _want_ to do it, full-time, with devotion.

Be ready for teeth-gnashing over _something_, be ready to stifle strong reactions thereto. Scenario: kid is capable, but takes hours to do what can be done in minutes - day after day; will you be patient until the kid gets it, or will you scream in frustration?

Homeschooling is great. Absolutely consider it. Not every family can handle it.

They are concerned about her being way to smart for public school. They are deplorable here.

They have checked into Catholic and looked at prices for private schools.

There is a battle in the State legislature going on right now.

Local teachers union is very strong.

We home schooled all four of our kids. Three have already graduated the equivalent high school level.

My best advice is to not focus so much on pre-packaged home schooling programs, but concentrate instead on the ‘Three Rs’. Anyone can teach those to a child. The rest comes easy.

To give you some perspective, my wife is a product of the Florida public school system, but she managed to school our kids to a level that exceeds her own education.

I homeschooled four.

I used Abeka Language for the First three years.

I used Daily grams and Easy grammar from four on.

I Abeka math for first three grades then Saxon 5/4 and up through high school

I used Abeka history from four to 8

I used a broad lit program, not Abeka with complex and significant reading lists and read aloud time each day.

I used various writing programs, fit it to the child.
