He reportedly "lost" or crashed 4 planes; two due to his clowning around. A decent article on the crashes. I see his behavior as a pilot mirrors that of the politician he is today - reckless, probably to his spoiled, blue blood upbringing::

I think they found missing records of another plane he crashed during the Viet Nam war and he now has a total of 5 U.S. planes destroyed making him the 1st and only Vietnamese Ace.
