In our own geology, ciontinentak drift in 1965 was controversial. Now in exogeology we see that gargantuan plasma arcs are possible, but what other close approaches of other planetoids or planets would pass close enough to Mars in a near miss to generate such plasma arc. It thinned the crust of the whole northern hemisphere, like an apple peeler.
But such plasma arcs would also denude the planet of water and atmosphere, eh?

I remember that well, for some reason - probably because it was in the same league as the "there are no meteorites" by French scientists way back when.
