President Donald Trump addressed a huge crowd in Melbourne, Florida on Saturday, making the case that he is hardly the first president to attack the press, noting that several presidents before him also spoke of the press in less than favorable terms.

“Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln and many of our greatest presidents fought with the media and called them out often times on their lies,” President Trump told the crowd at Orlando-Melbourne International Airport. “When the media lies to people, I will never, ever let them get away with it. I will do whatever I can to that they don’t get away with it,” Trump promised.
“They have their own agenda and their agenda is not your agenda,” he said about the media before quoting great Founding Father Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States and the author of the Declaration of Independence.

Jefferson also said, “The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. But I should mean that every man should receive those papers and be capable of reading them.”
