The view from the Lincoln memorial is fantastic, and be sure to take in both Daniel Chester French’s magnificent sculpture, as well as Lincoln’s very inspiring quotes around the ceiling. As others have said, you can spend forever in the Mall museums - and they are free (well, you pay on April 15), so you can go in and out as you wish. The Museum of American History is unique (it’s the one most people mean when they say “Smithsonian”). The West Wing (older part) of the National Gallery of Art is one of the finest art museums in the world.
If you have time to go farther afield, go to Great Falls (I recommend the Maryland side), walk out to the falls, and also hike the Billy Goat Trail, which has great views of the Potomac Gorge.
If you have time and money - go see a Caps game - it won’t be the playoffs yet, so they have a good chance of winning.
Daniel Chester French is also credited with sculptures in the main reading room of the Library of Congress - Herodutus and the female figure of History. French also sculpted the sculpture in DuPont Circle. Great Falls is a great suggestion - and cheap or free to get in the park.
When we lived in the DC area in the early ‘70s, our kids loved to go to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing on 14th St. to see millions of dollars being printed. I checked their website and it appears that you can still tour it, but in February and March they are installing new printing presses so they may not be up and running yet.
Im sure obama wore out the money printing presses
Visit the World War Two Memorial. It’s simply awesome. There are always WW2 vets there. Your children should meet some of these heroes before they’re gone forever.
Gadsby’s Tavern in old town Alexandria is a great dining experience that your children will remember.
The White House tour has to be done, but it’s boring.
Air and Space Museum and Arboretum.
