Mother says hospital gave her wrong baby to breastfeed

ONTVALE, NJ (WCBS/CNN) – A couple is suing a hospital because the new mother was given the wrong baby to breastfeed, they say.

Melissa Richman says that in September after a three-hour C-section, a nurse brought her a baby to breastfeed.

The nurse returned 20 minutes later and demanded Richman give the baby back.

"She said, ‘I need you to give me the baby right now.’ And so I did. She said, ‘There has been a terrible mistake. This isn't your baby.’ I started going back and thinking, ‘Did I feed her the first time? Is this even my baby?’ How does something like this even happen?" Richman said.

The mother says the hospital staff put her and her baby, Scarlett, at risk.

A few minutes after the mix-up, Richman says the nurse brought Scarlett in to breastfeed.

"They immediately put her right on me and they didn't clean me off, so I started worrying about the saliva and stuff from the other baby," she said.

Now, she and her husband are suing the hospital over what happened.

I know a family, now mostly deceased whose mother fed another baby after feeding her own. That baby could not keep down cow’s milk.

He grew up to be a moderately well known businessman and politician.

My sister’s an RN in the maternity wing of her hospital- she says it is unbelievable how lazy women are these days. The mothers will do literally nothing but lay flat on their arse. They put basinettes in the rooms and the mothers will not even get up to go pick up their baby- they call for the nurses to pick up the babies and hand them to the mothers, then later call the nurses to put them back in the basinette when they get bored with their kid.
They won’t even wipe their infants’ faces, much less anything else.
It isn’t just the occasional mother, it is a definite trend.

My great aunt was suckled by an inlaw who lived in the same county after her mother died just after giving birth, so the father could continue to work on the railroad while the eldest son who was 15 or 16 took care of the other children.
She grew up to be a charming, doting, and well educated mother herself.

That's exactly what I was going to say. You couldn't consider yourself as part of the "uppercrust" unless you had a wet-nurse for your new baby.

My female cousin .. my father's sister's daughter .. was born just a few days before me. Her mother developed something that prevented her from nursing my cousin for a few weeks, so she was nursed by my mother, as was I.

I never got along with her ... must be the memory of her muscling in on my territory ...

Have you ever given birth? They call it “labor” for a reason. I passed out the first time I got up after giving birth to my first. Luckily my roommate saw me going down and summoned the nurse.

They saw a chance to sue and pick up a settlement from the hospital or its insurance company, that’s all. Decent people would have just let it go.

You need them to clean you off?

At least supply her with some suitable wipes....

Missing the point - both families should sue the hospital for endangering their babies.

I’m sure that’s true for some but for what hospitals charge these days, patients ought to be sleeping on sheets made of gold thread!
