US Vs. Germany Fed Cup Tennis Match Opens with Nazi Anthem
Jewish Press ^ | 2-12-2017 | Staff

German tennis player Andrea Petkovic said it was “the worst thing I experienced,” and the “epitome of ignorance,” after her Saturday match in Lahaina, Hawaii, against American Alison Riske began with a robust singing of the German national anthem so cherished by the late Adolf Hitler, Das Lied der Deutschen, which opens with the immortal verse, “Deutschland, Deutschland ueber alles” (Germany, Germany above all), and has been banned in Germany since 1945.

Huh, Really?

I am pretty big on History and am a well informed guy and I didn't know that.

Perhaps because it just isn't true?

It was banned by the occupying powers. Not by the German Federal Republic.

Of course normally play national anthems, they just play the melody without including the words.

Canadian flag is upside down AND the American flag (if in the US) should have the “honor point”, i.e. where the Canadian flag is.

Over 30 years ago, my Mom and Dad were on the QE2, which had picked up a lot of new waiters at its last port of call in Hamburg.

A British couple at the next table said “Oh my...they have quite a few Germans on staff this passage, don’t they”.

To which my Mom, in her broad Boston accent responded, “DON’T MENTION THE WAR.”

The entire dining room erupted into laughter, and my parents and the British couple remained best friends for the rest of their lives.

“Deutschland Uber Alles” is not a Nazi anthem. It dates back to Imperial Germany.

The music was also written by Joseph Haydn of the illustrious Haydn family.

It seems Petkovic took it very personally. “It is the worst thing that has ever happened to me”. (A joke, right?)

“I thought it was the epitome of ignorance, and I’ve never felt more disrespected in my whole life, let alone in Fed Cup, and I’ve played Fed Cup for 13 years now and it is the worst thing that has ever happened to me,” Petkovic said after her loss.

I doubt that he still holds the same opinion after all that has happened since those refugees invaded Germany.

Not a Nazi anthem. The words were written in the 1840’s. The music was written in 1797 by the great composer Joseph Haydn and was used for the Aurtrian national anthem until the early twentieth century.

The Song of the (Socialist Unity) Party--Ernst Busch (1950)
The Party, the Party is always right
And comrades, it's here to stay.
Because who fights for justice is always right
Against lies and exploitation...
So In Lenin's spirit, forged by Stalin,
The Party, the Party, the Party!

Actually, the melody dates back further than that. To the time of Franz Josef Haydn. Who was Austrian ...

There is a hymn called “ Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken” which is set to this music.
