I'd agree. It was one of the first series where the aliens actually looked alien. Plus, the show may have been one of the first sci-fi shows designed from the start with a story-arc for the whole series.
They certainly did a better job than most other shows of the time. Yes, the fact that aliens are invariably human looking has long been a major flaw in a lot of science fiction stories. The show attempted to not only make different looking aliens, but also it tried to represent viewpoints that were inherently alien. It also gave the various alien groups distinctive cultures.
Plus, the show may have been one of the first sci-fi shows designed from the start with a story-arc for the whole series.
That was one of the things I most liked about it. Finally we have a show where the episodes are connected in an arc, rather than being a sequence of independent events which generally had nothing to do with each other.
You had to watch it for a long time to begin to appreciate how complex the story was.
