South Dakota Just Legalized Braiding Hair Without A License

Thanks to legislation signed today, South Dakotans no longer need the government’s permission to braid hair. Signed by Gov. Dennis Daugaard, the bill, HB 1048, exempts natural hair braiders from the state’s thicket of cosmetology regulations.

Previously, braiders faced the toughest law in the nation. Before anyone could work twisting or braiding hair, they first had to obtain a cosmetology license. That license requires at least 2,100 hours of training, which can cost nearly $15,000 in tuition. Meanwhile, braiding without a permission slip from the government could lead to fines and even jail time. Adding to the absurdity, many cosmetology schools don’t even teach African-style braiding techniques, and those that do dedicate almost no time to the subject.

“Today’s signature is a win for entrepreneurship, economic liberty and just plain common sense,” noted Institute for Justice Senior Attorney Paul Avelar. “The government has no business licensing something as safe and common as braiding hair.”

It starts with unregulated hair braiding and next thing you know people will be braiding hair out in public, on the streets, and in school buses. Teenagers will be braiding children's hair. All those secret hair braiding societies will become public. There will be hair braiding everywhere you go. People will not only braid one person's hair but now they will be free to braid as many people's hair as they can. They will be doing it without any protection. People will not be required to wear gloves when they braid someone's hair. Society is doomed. This is scandalous.

It’s statism. it is an example of an industry being in bed with a goverment. It is the complete opposite of capitalism. It is an exame of fascism. If a person is caught doing something as innocuos as braiding another person’s hair, the government will intervene and punish that person. That’s fascism and it is a Democrat’s creation I’d wager. It all seems silly and maybe it is on the surface but when you really think about it, it really isn’t.

I read once that almost all Federal Corrections Facilities have barber/hair styling/beauty schools, but only a few states will allow you to obtain a barber/hair styling license if you are a convicted felon.

Irony.

It’s not irony. It’s a plan.

We will teach how to do something but you are going to have to leave the state to earn money doing that.

It’s only fascism when Republicans do it.

A driver’s license should be good for life...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It almost is, in Arizona. I’ve forgotten all the details but my daughter lives there and has had the same d.l. for more than 20 years. I think she told me that she would have to take an eye test in 20 more years, when she turns 65.
