America’s Most Expensive House ... Times Two
NYT ^ | 3 Feb 2017 | ROBERT FRANK

Posted on 02/04/2017 7:00:00 AM PST by DUMBGRUNT

Mr. Makowsky’s 38,000-square-foot high-tech palace signifies a new level of superhome — for now. Less than 10 miles away, an even bigger home is under construction that will be listed for $500 million.

His latest creation took 300 workers four years to build.

Rather than a 12-car garage, Mr. Makowsky’s house has an “auto gallery” stocked with 12 examples of some of the rarest, fastest cars in the world, including a 1936 Mercedes that is valued at $15 million.

“This house is more like a land yacht,” he said. “It didn’t make sense to me that somebody would spend $300 million on a boat that they use eight weeks a year and live in a house that only cost $20 million or $30 million.”

I’m not getting the bowling alley/paddle board combo.

For that price, the neighbors are waaaay too close. No one that wealthy wants to step out onto the deck and have the neighbors reach over for a cup of coffee.

Somehow I think the entire household staff will be Spanish speaking making a generous $5 an hour.

Really a few million dollar house on 50 thousand acre ranch in one of the free western states makes a lot more sense.

Apparently he made his fortune by marrying Kathy Van Zeeland and selling handbags. I remember those. They were in every TJ Maxx and Marshalls. I saw them everywhere.

Interesting note: The helicopter on the roof is from the TV show Airwolf and doesn’t actually fly. It’s just a decoration. Looks like fake power to me.

Why yes!
You can see the parking on the lower level!

Odd? That is where the indoor target range belongs?

Also odd, the brick chimney from a fireplace terminates at the deck level? Typically two feet above? Does AstroTurf burn?

We live in a time of nouveau riche.

This guy will have to hire people to get any significant use out of this place.

He is trying to buy status.

It will be put to other uses in 30 years. Maybe a museum.

It appears it was built on spec, and that Makowsky expects to sell it to make money.

The caretakes are living the good life, cheap.

To be clear:

I mean he will have to hire people to use the amenities to get much use of them.

The caretakers will get the most use, and they will be paid to live there.

It’s not a home. It’s a museum.

I paid cash for my little home(not house...BIG difference) With the small amount of acreage surrounded by woods I have a far better “HOME” than this man or any who own in Bel air. I can’t see or hear any heighbors unless they are hunting or doing target practice...maintenance is basic nature does the most of the outside...I see no logic in structures such as those....to me its a concrete jungle with overpriced money pits....you could probably bet your last dollar that people in that area wouldn’t go out of their way to help someone unless it was to their advantage IMHO.

12 car garage? Piker. There’s a guy in Dallas that built at 70 car underground garage at his house. He said his grandkids could play there in bad weather, and it would give his guests a place to park.
