yet no germans or italians were mass interred.

Not mass internments but some were interned. And their internments were based on evidence that they might be a threat, and not just because they were German or Italian.

We had Germans living across the street from us during WWII. My mom said she was questioned by the "police" about their coming and going.

IIRC, no papers were allowed to be printed in German in this same city during WWII...and maybe a broader area.
