A Brooklyn mom confessed to beating her 4-year-old son with a broomstick, and then leaving him to die in a makeshift bathtub, police sources said Thursday.
Zarah Coombs was arrested and charged with murder, manslaughter, acting in a manner injurious to a child and possession of a weapon after admitting to investigators that she had repeatedly struck little Zamair with the broom in the kitchen of their Brownsville home, knocking him unconscious before he died, law enforcement sources said.
Coombs, 26, made the confession while cops grilled her and her live-in boyfriend — identified by sources as Jamari Richardson, 26 — after police made the horrific discovery.
The mom claimed to suffer from postpartum depression and that she was struggling with caring for her three other young children, ages 9, 1, and 1 month, sources said.
Police were called around 9 p.m. Wednesday to the family’s basement apartment on Riverdale Avenue near Amboy Street, where they found Zamair unconscious and unresponsive in the large plastic storage bin filled with water, police said.
It appeared that Zamair’s mom walked away to tend to one or both of her two other young children, leaving Zamair unattended in the container, police said.
