How weird is it, for a gift like this to go unscrutinized and unmentioned, when every single thing Melania Trump has done and even worn has been subject to endless speculation as to “symbolism?”

The report I saw said it was a faux pas by Michelle to hand a gift to Laura Bush, and a repeated one now, not a tradition, not something done before Michelle. I don’t know if the report was correct.
Media speculating is was a picture frame.

She was a little awkward, but I give both of the Obamas credit for being gracious.

I skimmed through a long, detailed article on Bush’s inaugural. Near the bottom it talks about the seemingly tenseness until Hillary Clinton touched Laura Bush’s arm and they each responded with a smile. Likewise, a somber Bill Clinton gave a smile as he extended a hand to Mr. Bush.....
Lots of detail, no present. Could be that Michelle is the one that started it.
My kids were watching the laying of the wreath at the Tomb of the unknown soldier and asked why Trump wasn’t saluting. I told them that was only for military guys - I can’t remember if being former military it was okay to do that or not. But I did know that Reagan started saluting the flag and the troops and started that tradition - he was commander-in-chief.
My daughter quipped “You mean he didn’t just look at his cell-phone as he came down AirForce One and ignoring the military guard like obama did?”
I don’t have a problem with Moochelle’s surprise at the gift - what REALLY cracked me up is what she did next.
The setting: Leader of Free World meeting About-to-be-Leader of the Free World - oh yeah - and the wives
Oops: Michelle Obama doesn’t expect ‘normal female greeting protocol’ of Melania giving a gift. Ok, fine.
The FUNNY part not talked about: Michelle doesn’t know what to do with it so what does she do? Like many wives - she gives it to her husband to ‘take care of’ - and what does The Leader of the Free World do? - Be a good husband and walk away from the greeting and bring it inside.
Totally real and funny at the same time.
Mooch looked like Melania had handed her a full bed pan.
