It may seem strange to you, but this is the "New Way" to teach. They call it "Child-Centered" education. The teacher is not supposed to be the "Sage on the Stage", not supposed to do "Chalk and Talk", not supposed to actively teach. If you are observed and you are teaching the way we all are familiar with, you will get an unsatisfactory rating! What you describe is a typical Commie Core lesson. Students are divided into groups of 4 or so, given information packets that have a few questions, and then proceed to sit there, read the few paragraphs and answer the questions. There is little to no discussion, little to no teacher explanation, etc.
Social Studies
And the grammar corrections.
In service days, union meetings, professional conferences,
prep periods, holidays, and summer vacation.....I don’t
know.
I graduated HS in 69. My favorite teacher “Duke” was the
BFF of my JV football coach. The 2 had gone to Chico St.
together on party scholarships. Went water skiing with
the 2 of them after graduation. Asked History teacher
Duke for advice since I was going away to college. He
stuck a jug of Teachers in my hand and said “drink
scotch”. I asked why he recommended Scotch and he replied
that taking Scotch to a party assured you that you
wouldn’t have to share it with others. Best advice ever.
Both Duke and Coach had hottie wives. My HS sweetie lived
near both and babysat for both couples. The two things I
regret most in my life is not following in Duke and
Coach JC’s footsteps as a teacher and not marrying that pretty Italian g friend. Had I become a history teacher in that era I could have had a full
career teaching history. By the time I did get
a History BA you couldn’t just teach history and
civics. Now, you need a Social Science BA to
become a history teacher.
Schools were never about education. Your mother did the right thing.
My 8 year old is in a charter school in Hudson County NJ and I have to say I am so far satisfied with the school.
Of course we augment and supplement at home.
Hello. I am a long time high school History teacher, Department Chairman, and former Marine. I kid you not, when I deal with wishes of parents, I treat you with utmost respect. That said, it doesn’t mean I always tell you what you want to hear. You are entitled to know the rationale behind your daughter’s lesson. You’re paying for it. You also rate a reasonable meeting. Go in with an open mind. Not all teachers are sloth-like propagandists of the Left. Many of us have been fighting for kids and parents for many years. I know I’ve been “behind enemy lines” for decades. Fight for your kid, but be fair. Some teachers deserve to be raked over the coals, but many are dedicated and conscientious. Fight for America and honest, appropriate curriculum. I wish you and your family the best.
As a high school teacher I often find that my history students are deficient in geography. The main reason for this is that they spend their elementary years doing test preparation, and geography gets at best a lick and a promise. In most cases this is essentially an administrative decision, not the teacher. Some principals require their staff to follow the same classroom practices, districts mandate the use of specific materials, etc. This sort of thing happens whether there is a teachers union or not, tenured or not. But, to answer your question, some of us are teaching out there, and at times we succeed. Hope she passed her test.
ALL schools are child abuse centers.
There ARE no “good schools”—although, magically, people always insist that THEIR local school is good.
The very concept of “school” is evil and abusive.
Ping.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Homeschool her.
It takes a fraction of the time that public education does.
Kids?
Two words: Teachers indoctrinate .
You are joking, right?
“The very concept of school is evil and abusive.”
Definitely one of the strangest posts I have ever seen on FR.
.
I have noticed that also as an online science teacher. The students expect every possible test question and every answer to be spelled out in advance. They should be making their own study guides! It is called an outline. In terms of the OP question, all that most administrators care about is that the kids are not being sent to them for behavioral issues and that they don’t hear from the parents. What is actually being taught is a side issue at best.
I’m an elementary teacher and our state dictates the large number of daily minutes required for Math and English. Then, add in PE, lunch, reading interventions, math interventions, music, art, writing, library research, and computer skills. There’s little time for anything else. It’s hard to fit in social studies or science on a daily basis. Breaks my heart, as those are student favorites! But the Common Core tests are focused on Math and English, so that’s where our time goes.
Very well stated. My dad was a chemistry and physics teacher. He put in extra time and effort. Every year he would talk with local college professors to make sure his classes were preparing kids for college classes. He often had several former students call him during their freshman year of college just laughing at how easy their chem/physics classes were for them compared to their classmates.
At the same school some other teachers were less committed. Some put in tremendous effort. One teacher couldn’t find a satisfactory American history curriculum so he wrote his own.
These days the ability of teachers to go above and beyond is limited by the lockstep teaching required by the government. This is one of the manyreasons we homeschool our kids.
Social Study? Do you mean Social Studies?
