Get your kid out of the Stalinist Sausage Factory if you value them at all.
All high schools are different——certainly not all are “child abuse centers”.
Did you homeschool your kids,or use private schools?

I teach online college courses in American History and Government. First question out of every students mouth (or email) is “do you provide a study guide?” which is code for exam question answers. When I say no, several will quit.
And many are clueless as to what I can determine from their records of access, time spent in text, on assignments, content coverage etc. End of semester is always a shocker to more than a few....even though the rules have been clearly elaborated at semester’s beginning.

If the writing of the poster is an example of what she feels would be good/proper/correct writing, then perhaps she should not be so critical of what she is hearing from the 7 year-old. JMHO

Some of the best public schools in my area are in VERY affluent communities——full of some very rich kids.

In some schools here, the teachers hand out “packets” of course materials. The students are to go through the packets while the teacher sits at her desk. If a student has a question, the teacher tells him/her to go back and study the packet. If the student still needs help, well, it’s obvious to the “teacher” that the student just didn’t read the packet.
With our children I found that the “teaching” stops when the teachers no longer understand the material (usually in junior high; most public school teachers are stupid/uneducated - especially in math/science). After that, the kids are increasingly directed to online subject matter and it really falls on the parents to actually teach. The students will pass if they don’t bother to learn; those that do just get better grades.
They probably work the indoctrination into all of their lesson plans.

The reality is that there are good schools and bad schools in all 3 categories. There are dedicated teachers and competent as well as lousy teachers in all 3 categories. There are children who want to learn, and there are children who don't want to learn in all 3 categories. There are students who need additional help from a parent or a tutor. There are lazy teachers and there are lazy parents. There are students who don't pay attention in class and are oblivious to the fact that there teacher taught on a subject. There are teachers who teach their hearts out and there are teachers who expect their students to learn everything by themselves or from fellow students.
I can attest to all of the above. I have seen or experienced it all, from good and bad public school, private school and home schools. Regardless of which type of school, as the parent it is your responsibility to ensure that your child gets a good education. That requires that you don't leave everything up to the teacher. Education does not end when your child comes home every day. If they don't know something, it is your responsibility and privilege to ensure that they do. PS: don't assume that everything your child tells you is true. As in, "What did you learn today?" Answer: "Nothing".
In ed school, we were told we were not teachers, but facilitators, where we were to facilitate students’ learning, and not act like we had all the answers. Also, heard this ad nausium, we we supposed to be the “guide on the side, not the sage on the stage.” In other words, we were to sit off to the side and let kids direct their learning, not lecture to them. We weren’t to have all of the answers. This was elementary education, btw. No wonder kids have no respect for proper authority.
If second grade isn’t being tested in social studies this year (national testing) then teachers won’t spend time on social studies lessons in class.
That's the truth. Like every other profession, there are good teachers and bad teachers and good schools and bad schools, but to some on FR there are only bad ones. They bad mouth all teachers and wonder why more conservatives don't become teachers. We need to encourage more conservatives to become teachers if we want change. Getting politicians out of education would also help.
Times have changed, haven’t they? Today’s curriculum focuses on programming. And more programming. One of Ann Coulter’s most spot-on comments: “As long as American liberals are going to keep announcing that they’re embarrassed for their country, how about being embarrassed by our public schools or by our ridiculous trial lawyer culture that other countries find laughable? Truly sorry that you and your daughter are caused such frustration.”
