Trump signals he's softening on immigration: 'Working on a plan' that'll make DREAMers 'very happy'

President-elect Donald Trump says his administration is working on a plan that will make illegal immigrant children 'very happy,' and it will done in the next couple months

The president-elect said in the course of his campaign for the White House that illegal immigrants of all ages would be sent out of the country. Only the 'good' ones would be allowed to return, Trump stated.

He vowed to overturn President Obama's executive orders directing immigration officials to focus their efforts on deporting criminals, shielding children through his Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

After some pleading from exiting President Barack Obama and immigration reform advocates, including some Republicans in Congress, Trump seemed to soften his stance.

He told Time Magazine in early December that he wanted to 'work something out' for illegal immigrant children, known as DREAMers.

'I want Dreamers for our children also. We’re going to work something out. On a humanitarian basis it’s a very tough situation,' he said. 'We’re going to work something out that’s going to make people happy and proud. But that’s a very tough situation.'

Trump is not really GOP or DNC, he is a breath of fresh air.

The Dims would have said they all get to stay and we’ll give them all free tuition , healthcare, housing and food stamps.

I’m sure Trump will come up with something great.

The best bet to offer Dreamers citizenship: give them a choice of military service in the Reserves or National Guard, if they are educated enough and already have jobs, as the *fastest* route to citizenship.

Second, and this is an odd one, use existing federal funds to set up local library English as a Second Language (ESL) programs targeted at both legal immigrants and Dreamers. That is, the fastest route to success in the US is to be English literate. Give them “citizenship credit” for levels of proficiency in English.

Public libraries are a great place to do this, because much of their funding, from all sources, is based on the headcount of those that visit. Many library workers have degrees in English along with Library Science. And a goodly number speak Spanish.

The idea is not just citizenship for those we choose to give citizenship, but *successful* citizenship. The path to prosperity.

The flip side to all of this is deportation of the bad ones. Very little tolerance for misbehavior. If they foul up, they are and should be kicked out and permanently barred from reentry, a serious federal felony if they come back.

Likewise, there should be no effort to integrate refugees. It is not unreasonable to set up secure refugee camps, such as we have in Florida. To let refugees know that if they come here because they fear for their lives, they will live, but they will not become residents of the US, only staying here as long as necessary before they can return home to their native country.

A friend of mine moved from her home in one county to another. She wanted to keep her children in their middle school until the school year ended. She was told that to do so would mean that she would have to pay tuition for both children. Same state, but different counties within 20 minutes of each other and she would have to pay their tuition. Ridiculous.
