I don’t like it, either. Washington and Lincoln are far more worthy, and I can tell you neither one of them would approve of such sort of cult worship. Add to that, focusing exclusively on MLK for a singular holiday diminishes countless individuals who participated in (Black) Civil Rights going back to the 19th century, many of whom gave their lives. I think the name of the holiday should simply be called “Civil Rights Day.”
