Frankly, he was a very handsome man “as is”, as to why he went through the “freak” phase, who knows.

My guess would be that he was abused as a child - there have certainly been enough stories to that effect. Incredibly talented man - also an incredibly troubled man who, from what I understand, repeated the pattern of abuse on other innocent children.

As I understand it he hated the thought of growing up and looking like his abusive dad.
