I use word all the time on a MacBook. generally, new versions of Msoft word become available on the Mac platform a good 6-12 months before it hits windows msoft uses it as a test environment for new versions.
Also, you can edit/create word document without word (in for example apple’s free pages software) if you are not using advanced features.
