Why liberal elites are so resentful of middle America

This week we saw a few perfect examples of why liberal coastal elites are so resentful of middle America: It’s because the supposed rubes and rednecks aren’t more resentful of the elites — or, more specifically, the elites’ “success.”

They don’t aspire to be like their self-appointed betters.

Some Americans just don’t need much; they don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting to have a 1,500-square-foot house, watch football and go to church on Sunday. They don’t want to leave their hometowns to come to Silicon Valley or Washington, DC, or Manhattan. They place great value on community and living near family and carrying out family traditions.

The Declaration of Independance, the greatest middle finger to the ruling class ever written, has this to say:

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. What does the pursuit of happiness mean? It means the purpose of our lives is up to us to determine, not some ruling class. Tyranny means a ruling class forcing the rest of us to pursue their happiness, not our own.

They hate us because we merrily go along pursuing our own happiness.

You know, I lived in San Francisco and other parts of the Bay Area for 35 years, and there isn't one of those areas you listed where my current location (AZ) doesn't win by a mile.

OK, maybe the Richmond/Sunset areas of SF have more authentic Chinese restaurants... :)

The main reason I see for this is that excessive taxation and regulation in California drives out virtually everything interesting, leaving only the mega-corporate and homogenized offerings behind. The exact opposite of what liberals claim is so great about the area.

The funny thing is that we have a great Thai restaurant run by Thai immigrants here, probably go to those “world class museums” more often then they do , eat “farm to table” every day, can afford to attend performing arts, the famous universities have been taken over by pod people...

Sorry, don't see where the benefits out way the disadvantages of never knowing your neighbors, never attending a performance where you actually know everybody, never see the stars at night or walk in grass and wear something other then black.

Glad u like. Yes. Envy. Tragic they can’t find some happiness for themselves with all their wealth and worldly advantages. But this is a very old story it’s been known and observed for millennia - see Bible ( or Greek philosophy or Buddha dharma or...).
