Now for something REALLY important: I want to get rid of my satellite dish and switch to internet streaming. I have no idea how to do that. I want: old movies, old TV shows, select new shows, News. What about Fire Stik TV? D-Link? I already have access to Amazon Prime, what would I need to cancel cable and still have the idiot box for what I like? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
As long as you have a TV that can link to your internet connection you won’t have a problem. If you don’t you’ll need the Amazon Fire, Roku or Apple TV (doesn’t have Amazon Prime) to get the streaming video.
Trouble is, my TV CANNOT connect directly to the Internet. I have to use some gadget with an HDMI plug.

What JMS said. You might be able to get subscriptions such as Sling, Hulu, CBS, PBS that go through your computer just not as easy as having a wireless TV with a remote.
I find my ROKU to be good, but I have to search for everything and so far nothing in real time. I have not had it very long. Also have the Fire stick. Have to pay for too much good stuff. Again, no real time.

HULU is great for older TV shows.
Most newer laptops have HDMI output.
TV antenna will get you the local channels.

Then get Exodus for Kodi. Its a free player of current streams ... lots of good stuff. There are lots of videos on installing it.

All you really need is a TV with HDMI connections and a Blu-Ray Player (WiFi enabled), Roku or Apple TV.
Your TV itself does not need to be WiFi enabled.
We have a TV plus a Sony Blu-Ray player and can get Amazon Prime, Netflix, Vudu and Hudu.
Unless you WiFi connection is at least 10 MB/Sec or more, your streaming feed may not be optimal.
Hook the TV up as the monitor for your computer.
Is your gadget purple and is Roku printed on it, with an accompanying remote? Just trying to narrow this down.

OK all I am SEROIUSLY thinking about "Cutting the Cable" any suggestions on...
I could probably find LOTS more FR threads on this topic with a few more minutes work. It's a very popular topic.
As for me, I never watch broadcast TV. I have a new Tivo Bolt which records a few shows that I rarely watch. I just got a new Apple TV 4 which I really like (but it is terrible as a music streamer because you can't turn off the damned TV). I have a Roku which I still like for accessing Amazon and NetFlix (even though I can get to those services through the Panasonic TV, the Oppo Blu-Ray Player, and the Tivo Bolt). Recently I've been ripping a lifetime collection of a couple hundred DVDs and am putting them onto a 128 MB thumb drive plugged into our router. I'm probably going to replace that with a NAS drive with RAID 5 video streaming to the Apple TV. It's fun watching "Rumpole of the Bailey" and "Danger: UXB" again.
Unfortunately I can't cut the cable because my wife watches endless sports and home fix-it shows.
Already there.
The idea seems to be connecting the TV to Wi-Fi directly so as to not need ROKU, etc.

Oh...I also still subscribe to NetFlix DVD/Blu-Ray discs-by-mail service for $8/month. That gets me one disc at home for unlimited time, but no more than two discs per month. Less than $100 per year and I get access to their vast video library, most of which is not available for streaming!
So, in the POF household:

* Apple TV 4. Great for video streaming and music streaming your own content. You can get TV apps from major channels that are provided by your cable TV company (assuming you haven’t cut the cord)
* Tivo Bolt
* Panasonic TV with built-in internet access
Data Service
* Comcast Triple Play. Internet with “Boost” gets me something like 100 Mbps
Content Services
* NetFlix streaming + mail discs
* Amazon Prime (started it YEARS ago for “free” shipping and then they tossed in movies and music as a bonus)
In-Home Video Streaming
* 128 MB Thumb Drive “server” plugged into router. Stores about 35 DVD movies at high quality
* Rip DVD movies using MakeMKV and Handbrake
* Stream to the Apple TV 4
Even with all this tech junk, where do I spend most of my time? Books and FR.
