In contrast to Meryl Streep’s remarks, Ms. Davis’s comments seem broad, even deliberately obscure in moving from the hot button subject of Trump to a truism about the country as imperfect. Moreover, I cannot find any record of campaign contributions or political activism by actress Viola Davis. Perhaps she has some conservative inclinations, or may have a sense of caution about the professional risks for an actor to express harsh political views before a national TV audience. A woman who grew up in abject poverty seems likely to be of such a frame of mind.

Meh, I just sense leftist butt hurt.

Her values are not American mainstream values, so I say “Get on that boat!”

Viola was included in one of the Hillary ads before the election, so she’s a lefty. She’s just not as big of a dolt as Streep.

I see that, too. I don’t see anything there to get in a twist about. And these were backstage remarks, not in front of a mike or audience. I’ll take them as candid remarks. Naturally, they may mean something different to me than others...I Don see anything wrong with that, either.
