On our first day we made North Carolina and stopped there for the night.Next morning we got up to see that about an inch of snow had fallen overnight. We ate breakfast at the diner and, when done, one of us said "well, time to hit the road".The waitress happened to hear us and, incredulous, said "you're not gonna *drive* in this, are you?"
Soon after, while listening to a local radio station in the area while heading down I-95,a woman called in and said,in an Andy Griffith kind of way, "why,I looked outside my window and I saw a snow drift!"
Southerners....bless their hearts!
Four to five inches are impassable? I have driven a fifty mile round trip on solid ice before. I used to drive the dirt roads in four or five inches of snow for entertainment. Is it just that the roads are too hilly and steep?
Waleska got almost five inches and the black ice is treacherous.
It seems like the west and north got hit the hardest
Amicalola Falls.
That’s heaven on earth country right there.
I love staying in the Lodge at the state park.
Being a sea level guy, I love seeing the mountains.
It’s a combination of topography, drivers unused to the condition, and poor vehicle and equipment choices (2WD trucks, no snow tires, sometimes cars with Summer performance tires!).
Mega LOL! ... We got five inches of the white stuff up here in East TN. Like the guy in the phone commercial says, “I’m not goin’ anywhere.”
Not much to look at, but how is the driving? Aside from people who don’t know how to deal with slick roads?
Topography bump...lots of people have NO IDEA what some of the roads are like in the mountainous areas of the southeast...even a well-maintained road like the Blue Ridge Parkway can cause white-knuckle syndrome in the dark, and that’s in the summer. There are PLENTY of other roads that are a hairy ride in the daytime, without ice and snow being thrown into the mix. There’s a reason motorcyclists call this area ‘twisty heaven’.
Today we’ll be at 65* here in AZ. Tomorrow mid-70’s.
I’ll be thinking of you while enjoying a nice tall tea under our blue skies. :)
Yeah, I’ve waited for 30 minutes, then driven past that motorcycle accident scene in the Summer. The ambulance didn’t leave with his lights on, after they hoisted the litter up the side of the mountain.
When we came back a couple days later, there was a roadside shrine with cross and flowers.
BTW, this was near Blood Mountain IIRC, on the way to Young Harris and Brasstown Valley Resort via Dahlonega. In the Chattahoochie National Forest for sure. Great fun in a top-down Boxster, driven spiritedly but sensibly!
Yes the roads are hilly and steep. Also, they do not clear the secondary roads. There is ice under the snow. When you live in the mountains and you are 9 miles from town with roads that are not treated, that is a problem. The sheriff said to stay off the roads because they are impassable. It won’t be above freezing until Monday. I assume with the sun out it will help, but with no wind it is going to be a while until the roads are safe from ice. It is a South thing. LOL!
North Georgia Mountains. Would that be North of Athens?
I’m in NC we got 5 inches, which surprises me. Our usual experience here is more like yours. ;)
Here's the local situation:
City officials said on Friday that they expect crews to start snow removal operations early Monday morning, but because of past accumulation, parts of the city are already at snow storage capacity.
For some areas of town, the city warns that they may have to use sidewalks to store snow from the road next week.
