His mother is a US citizen, so he is also. Article never explains what sort of screwup has caused the problem.

I found another article that explained more fully that his mother has not provided documentation of sufficient US residency.

Because she moved to the UK at 13 and doesn’t have the two years post age 14 US residency that would provide automatic citizenship to her children born abroad.

And he has a minor criminal record.

Not sure where you got such an incorrect view of the law. Perhaps you should spend more time looking at the law, and less time pontificating on the internet.

No, his mother was underage when she left and she never got him US citizenship while in the UK. In fact, she and he kid have always known there were likely problems with his being a legit US citizen.

So, what’s wrong with being a UK citizen?

His mother is a US citizen, so he is also. Not necessarily. His mother or him had to apply for US citizenship. And there are eligibility requirements. He was born overseas.

Birth Abroad to One Citizen and One Alien Parent in Wedlock

A child born abroad to one U.S. citizen parent and one alien parent acquires U.S. citizenship at birth under Section 301(g) of the INA provided the U.S. citizen parent was physically present in the United States or one of its outlying possessions for the time period required by the law applicable at the time of the child's birth. (For birth on or after November 14, 1986, a period of five years physical presence, two after the age of fourteen, is required. For birth between December 24, 1952 and November 13, 1986, a period of ten years, five after the age of fourteen, is required for physical presence in the United States or one of its outlying possessions to transmit U.S. citizenship to the child.) The U.S. citizen parent must be the genetic or the gestational parent and the legal parent of the child under local law at the time and place of the child’s birth to transmit U.S. citizenship.

I see that he is applying for a green card. No doubt his mother is sponsoring him, but he must get in line. If he graduated high school in 1993, he must be around 40 years old.

> His mother is a US citizen

The article is unclear.

"Caroline Grant, is a U.S. citizen who moved with her family to the U.K. when she was a teen. She married a British man at age 17 and gave birth to Kingdon a year later in the U.K.

She took Kingdon, at the age of three, to the U.S. on March 19, 1979 on a visitor’s visa and British passport."

Did Caroline Grant become a British citizen? She moved there when she was "a teen" and then when she was 17 married a British man. A "year later" she had a child. Three years later she and the child traveled to the U.S. "on a visitor’s visa and British passport".
