A motorcyclist who sailed off the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway after crashing into a sport utility vehicle was clocked at 116 mph moments before the wreck, a bridge official said Monday (Dec. 12). The search for the victim has resumed, with sheriff's deputies from St. Tammany and Jefferson parishes scouring the water in boats.

Dufrechou said a Causeway police officer was driving south on the bridge on Saturday at about 11 p.m. when he saw a motorcycle speeding north. The officer radioed to a colleague who was parked in a crossover near the bridge's eight-mile hump.

Investigators were not sure whether the cyclist lost control and flew off the motorcycle before or after hitting the left rear of the SUV, which was in the right lane, Dufrechou said. The debris field started just before the 8.1-mile marker and extended several hundred feet to the north, he said.

I’m sure he did. Nothing better than racing the devil. As to your assumption about his uninsured status, well that’s just an assumption and an unfounded one at that. That being said, I’d never be in triple digits on an occupied roadway. His life. His mistake. He paid the price.

116mph? He must have only been in 3rd gear.

Survived around 7-8 years of high speed scoot craziness. The few times the bike went down or I hit something were low speed mishaps. 116 is not near the top end of fast bikes. I was bike mechanic in the 70s during that time. Customers were 90% crazy kids. I’d get a “engine seems to start missing at around 120...”. This was after I had worked on it and they wanted me to take it out and check it for them. I refused to. I would check it the best I could with diagnostic tools at my disposal but my shop didn’t have a dyno.

My own bikes were a different matter. I’d take it out when traffic was light. Lets say 6am on a weekend and push it up to whatever it would give me. Not too bad with near zero traffic.

I scared myself a few times and realized that as long as I rode those things I would tend to push it. So I sold my last bike around 77 and bought a fishing boat. Much more relaxing.

When my kids got the bug, I told them I’d break their legs and save them the trouble doing it on a bike. Then I told them horror stories that one tends to hear about in the bike industry. Perhaps they should have learned on their own like I did.

That’s why they’re called, “Donorcycles”, although in this case there’s not much left to donate.

That had to have been a life changing thrill flying through the air like that.

One time a co-worker was late coming in. Said he was stuck in traffic in a tunnel, when he felt a bang hit his truck. Got out, and saw a smashed motorcycle behind his truck, no cycle driver in sight. Until he looked in the truck bed and saw the dead body. Very short thrill ride.

It was not an assumption, because I never said he didn't have insurance. I said he probably doesn't. It's not unfounded when the number of uninsured down here is high, which is why my insurance is better than double what I used to pay in Virginia, and it's the same insurance company I've always had, USAA.

That’s what you might call “ludicrous speed” on a causeway.

Here too. I shudder to think of the times I raced through city streets in excess of 100mph.

Saying, quote: is an assumption. The word "probably" qualifies your assumption but it doesn't not change the fact that it is an assumption.
