Sorry everyone, but this is a hoax. According to Snopes and truthorfiction.com the story is not real. So dry up your tears. I know I felt the very same way the first time I read that a few years ago.

Well, a good cry, can be therapeutic.
However, as one site makes clear: "But although the story about Tank the black lab is false, the story’s larger point about veterans’ willingness to sacrifice for the greater good is accurate. That’s likely why the eRumor has persisted since 2008."
The site also states:"Organizations like Dogs on Deployment and Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pet help deployed veterans find temporary or forever homes for their dogs and pets. It seems unlikely that a solider would make an outside arrangement with an animal shelter because those organizations specialize in placing pets in loving, caring homes."
Although likely a bogus, but well intentioned, feel good story, it does remind us that when our warriors go forward to defend our homes and our lives and our freedoms, their fates, good or bad, affect us all in ways most cannot imagine.
Prayers tonight for those, home and abroad, wearing camo and blue, sailing ships, flying aircraft, toting a weapon, lugging a firehose and walking a beat.

Not that it would have mattered in this case, there are many programs for active military where their pets will be looked after when they are deployed.

I was not expecting to go all ‘John Boehner’ about some animal.
while I was reading it I had my little jack rustle mix and my Pomeranian cuddling and sharing half of a hot dog with them. when it comes to dogs I am as sappy as can be and when it comes to our service men who make sacrifices I am just as sappy.
I should have suspected. What are the chances of having two previous owners who wrote that well, and that candidly, one after the other. Most people young enough for active duty right now, are not interested in writing at length about anything longer than a Tweet. I almost didn’t finish, because the first letter was so long. Well. Many of us know of a serviceman who could have been the author of that second letter.
It was still worth composing and worth reading.
I’m not even a dog person, and it made me cry.
Don’t have to Snopes this. B.s. professional writing is the giveaway.

I’m not even going there even though I thought about it. I want this one to be true and if not am willing to accept fake news about a dog.
