I think the only reason the carrier is there is to get practice.

They don’t have inflight refueling that is carrier based.
We just lost two also...One in Dec 2015 and another in March 2106. Several sailors were injured in one of those mishaps.
They’re using coal fired steam engines.

They do not Trust their sailors, we had their Brass aboard (don’t remember if it was Kitty Hawk or Ranger) and they were in total disbelief that Enlisted were even allowed near the aircraft let alone involved in any of the Flight evolution’s.
They thought we were scamming them
If you weren’t operating carriers in the days of props, you are in for a LONNNGG learning curve when it comes to modern jets. It’s very evolutionary.
If the Russians can get their ground crews to stop stealing the anti-freeze used by aircraft to prevent icing at high altitudes, to drink themselves dead with, then maybe... just maybe... they can figure out how to keep ships systems functional.
We saw the best Russia could put into the field in its tussle with Georgia.

Exactly. Only way to get practice is to practice. So they are doing it. Is it a shock that they aren’t practiced BEFORE? When the ship had mostly been gathering rust?
Russian naval aviation has been “fledgling” since the late 60s...
The U.S. Navy aircraft carriers are truly impressive, both in terms of men and equipment. I fear, however, that they will be sitting ducks when faced with the latest generation Russian and Chinese missiles.
They need the software upgrade/bug fix from the US (stolen, of course).
My soldiers were trained to do the job of their squad leader, platoon sergeant, and my job as the Platoon Leader.
That's what makes our armed forces so effective.
