MANHATTAN (CNN) Tiffany, the iconic jewelry retailer, said on Tuesday that sales in the U.S. were hurt by all the chaos surrounding its flagship store on New York Citys 5th Avenue, which just so happens to be neighbors with Trump Tower.
While Tiffany didnt mention the President-elect by name, it was clear what Tiffany was referring to when it said that there has been some adverse effect on traffic at the 5th Avenue location due to the impact of recent election-related activity.
Tiffany added that there was softness at this store and warned that sales could be hit again in the fourth quarter. The 5th Avenue store accounts for close to 10% of the companys total sales.
Overall sales for Tiffanys U.S. and other North American stores in its most recent quarter fell 2% from a year ago.
Security has been heightened on 5th Avenue since the election. There have been some protests outside Trump Tower. But much of the police activity is due to the fact that Donald Trump lives in Trump Tower and has been holed up there since the election.
Tiffany CFO Mark Erceg added during a conference call that there were minor disruptions to pedestrian foot traffic around the 5th Avenue store and that Tiffany was understandably cautious as to how the situation might impact sales over the coming weeks.
But its not all bad news for Tiffany. Sales in China and Japan were strong, helping to lead to a slight increase in overall revenue for the company. Its the first time Tiffanys quarterly sales rose since November 2014.
Tiffany CEO Frederic Cumenal said in a press release that the company was encouraged by some early signs of improvement in sales trends.
Investors chose to focus on that instead of the weakness in the Big Apple. Shares of Tiffany (TIF)rose 5% in early trading on the news.
Like most retailers, the holidays tend to be a busy time for Tiffany. And the company reaffirmed its outlook for the fourth quarter, a sign that it does not expect any further weakness at its flagship store to drag down results for the whole company.
Nonetheless, its a tumultuous time in the jewelry business putting aside all the election-related madness. Tiffanys competitor Signet (SIG), which owns discount jewelry brands Kay, Jared and Zales, has been accused of selling fake diamonds.
And online jeweler Blue Nile (NILE) is in the process of being taken private by a group led by Bain Capital.
Bain is the private equity firm co-founded by Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee who is rumored to be a contender for Secretary of State in Trumps administration.
So all things considered, Tiffany is actually holding up relatively well despite a continued police presence in New York that threatens to keep tourists and other shoppers away from 5th Avenue.
I’m going to get flamed for this, but I think President elect Trump should do whatever he can to minimize any damage to businesses caused by his security details. It’s not his fault, and has to be done, but living in the middle of the busiest part of the biggest city in the US is going to cause problems, and he should do his best to ensure his presence doesn’t hurt his neighbors. I hated it when Obummer or Bill caused problems, and don’t like it here.
“Trump Towers”
Just one. Tower.
“hes probably their landlord”
No, but he does own the air rights above the building.
You’d think that Tiffany’s would welcome the Trump presence. I can’t think of a means of providing more safety to its shoppers than having secret service people everywhere in the vicinity.
Tiffany’s? Oh no! Where is Audrey Hepburn gonna go for breakfast now? (Okay, very lame I know!)
Yeah, but then the LSM would pounce on him for making Dem elites look inconsiderately bad.
You're reminding me of Paltrow's screwing up her Kali neighborhood to host a BHO fundraiser.
Offer Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It’ll be more of a draw.
If the economy gets better, maybe more people can by their expensive rocks.
I live part time near where Obama takes vacation in Hawaii. I never once heard the impact it has on my little neighborhood. Or the entire island for that matter. They shut down the H3, Like Like, and Pali all so this clown could get a shave ice. Those are the three highways that cut across the island in to Honolulu from Kaneohe / Kailua. Then. Closing the entire Kailua beach and Lani Kai. Closing the entire bay when he goes out for a golf outing. The “girls” go out for ice cream. Having to stop through road blocks each time I need to leave the office and get sniffed by dogs and searched.
Nope, only stories about how dreamy it is to know Obama is allowing you to bask in his splendor as he vacations.
Now... Trump is even ruining the 1 percenters’ stores. They are suppose to be thrilled aren’t they?
Perhaps, but they can be pretty certain that if they get robbed it will be by someone punching them in the face and that person will not get past security in the other direction.
It seems like the pedestrian traffic that would purchase at Tiffany’s might be more likely to go there, knowing there is a larger security presence in the area now. JMHO
My birthday is April 22. ;)
Lol.
Oh, dear, is Tiffany’s in danger of going broke?
