Y-fronts, bell-bottoms and cable-knit vests! The 1970s men's clothing ads that reveal [tr]

One model with a mullet and mustache throws a 'Blue Steel' pose as he models a velour dressing gown while another similar-looking chap stands confidently in a snazzy pair of bell-bottom trousers.

These are snapshots from a range of 1970s adverts showing the most popular men's fashions of the day.

High-waist pants, skimpy briefs, synthetic fabrics and psychedelic patterns seem to be in vogue - looks more suited to the fancy dress parties of today.

I don’t know where I first saw the dress but I had to have it. Mother never let me buy anything off the rack so I had to make everything myself. But wonders of wonders, a friend had a dress shop and got a shipment of freight damaged goods or something and asked mother to come look. I spied the dress! But it was on hold for the prom queen, la te freakin’ da, snort, couldn’t stand her. Well, she never came to pick it up so I got it! It was too large but I made it fit. A few years ago, a girl in our daughter’s class didn’t have a prom dress (long sad story) so she wore it and loved it, too.

“I think the 1970’s were the worst decade on record for men’s fashion!”

Lol. I didn’t have much trouble. I was wearing Navy dungarees and later, khakis. Although I did have one pair of scotch plaid bellbottom slacks that my wife made me wear - one time.

If you went through the 70s you HAVE to read this classic. Hilarious commentary on a newly found JC Penneys catalog.

Wasn’t the name of the show Verne Lundquist did years ago?

My mother bought me a brown leisure suit and silky shirt that even then I refused to wear. I was in college from 72-76 and never saw anything like these guys, they must have been confined to Britain or NYC.

The 70s will not be remembered fondly for the fashion.

I have a pic of myself, man made fabric top, loud print bellbottoms, and my platform shoes————touring wineries in upstate New York.

We climbed many stairs—and it was very difficult, but no broken ankles.

I was a vision of loveliness.:-)

the required circle on your back pocket from the can of Skoal?

Mine was from the unused condom in my wallet.

Wish I would have thought of the Skoal dodge when my mom asked me about it.

At one point, I had a shag haircut. There's a picture of me wearing my black leather jacket sporting the shag.

I look like Rod Stewart - what the hell was I thinking?

As a young guy here in the 70’s all you ever really wanted to wear was Steeler gear.
