The Indian government is proposing to export its Tejas light combat aircraft — developed by Hindustran Aeronautics Limited — to other Asian states. New Delhi hopes that the indigenously developed fighter’s relatively simple design and potentially low maintenance costs will be a selling point for the jet. But India’s prospects for selling the “new” fighter are highly dubious.

I have made a few Indian friends who are hoteliers/business owners. What they say about the corruption in India may boggle your mind.

One built a hotel back in India and swears he will never do business again there.

Actually that HAL was a reference to IBM. (one letter off each initial)

Actually, Kubrick said that was just a coincidence, and he didn’t intend the name to refer to IBM.

Considering the quality of the work I’ve seen with software out sourced to India I am SO not surprised.

Caste systems will do that.

More likely endemic corruption and the fact that their best and brightest leave the country to make their fortunes elsewhere.

So why not just buy the FA-18 from the US and be done with it? Apparently Boeing is offering to manufacture the jet in India which would create jobs for India as well as the US, India could pick up valuable know-how about military aircraft manufacture and it would tie India to the most powerful military system in the world. Trying to do it all themselves is obviously not working, and while they try to get it right, they fall further and further behind China.

The Super Hornet is a heavy (ier), larger twin-engined fighter. It would be an overkill if you are looking to replace Mig-21s and Mig-23/27s. A lighter fighter is required: only two fit the bill as of now — the Gripen and the F-16.
