Winter really IS coming: 'Siberian snow theory' predicts an early and brutal cold season for the US
Daily Mail ^ | Nov. 23, 2016 | Cheyenne MacDonald

The United States could be in for a long, cold winter as snow cover in Siberia reaches its highest point for this time of year in decades, the father of the ‘Siberian Snow Theory’ has warned.

Snow cover in Siberia is sometimes used to predict winter weather in the US, and MIT climatologist Judah Cohen claims this year’s conditions are a ‘textbook situation,’ Bloomberg reports.

It’s thought that more snow in northern Eurasia signals the frigid temperatures set to hit the regions below.

And while the cold blast could strike anywhere among North America, Asia, or Europe, the expert warns the US may get hit harder than forecasters are expecting.

The Woolly Bears I've seen so far, have a broad stripe, meaning a 'mild winter', but they've been wrong before. We'll know how bad the winter really was, sometime in April.

Who are you calling vermin??

Mice.

Epic Fail Lawn Service needs to get after our grass, too, but at his last effort, he said he was out of gas, and then he went away for Thanksgiving weekend. I'll buy him some gas next week.

It’s 34 degrees here in the Twin Towns. The grass is green.

Early, would have been a month ago.

On Halloween, 1991, we received 28 inches of snow in less than 2 days, followed by sub-zero temperatures.

Comparatively, this “winter” has been a cake walk.

I still haven’t fired up my furnace.

“global warming causes global cooling”

I think that was the premise of that one movie, based on some models that “when” the polar ice cap melts all the cold water goes into the N. Atlantic and shuts down the circulation of the warm Gulf Stream. Nice to have it both ways.

I imagine that the heavy snow pack in Siberia could also be viewed as “warming” - where it is really cold (like the North Pole), hardly any snow falls - it is too cold to snow.

And just to be clear, man has NO discernible effect on the climate. And I believe that we will enter into a full-blown “ice age” next. And I hope that I’m not around to be proven right. (”Ice Age” is in caps, as many believe that we are in a warm period in an ongoing ice age with numerous periods of cold and warm).

“We have a snow storm predicted here in the Cascade passes over the next few days. This is a little early.”

I don’t know how you can say it is early. Traditionally, PNW ski resorts (many of them) have been open for Thanksgiving. And I remember encountering significant snow on Snoqualmie when driving home from the UW for the holiday.

So far it’s been fairly mild here, east Texas.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, our are should have a mild winter, same as last year.

http://www.almanac.com/

this may be different for other parts of the country. Our last harsh winter was 3 years ago, we got 3 inches of snow that stayed on the ground for several days. Usually it’s maybe an inch, gone by dark.

The past couple of years have been rough up north, record snows in places like Boston, Atlanta froze over for a week, but here we escaped except for winter of 2012-2013.

We’ve had fairly heavy early rain in central CA, and it has been quite cool.

We have had a drought here - our pond is dry - it has been in the 80s during the day even this week. If we’re not going to have a winter lets just go ahead and have spring early this year :-)

I am sorry. I wasn't really trying to make a statement about the significance of the weather in the passes this year. I was just providing my reaction to the article. Did you read it?

It is weather, it varies, sometimes the ski areas open even earlier than this especially up at Crystal which is at a higher elevation. But most skiers consider it a pretty good year when the ski areas open by Thanksgiving. Crystal will be opening in the next couple days and they are expecting enough snow to open at Snoqualmie in the next few days also.

From the Snoqualmie Summit Website:

“Our 75 year average opening day is right around December 2nd. Of course, we’ve had seasons where we’ve opened in early November and occasionally closer to the middle to latter part of December. We are very committed to opening as soon as we possibly can each ski season!”

To my wife and I it feels like this winter could end up being a cold one. That is just a feeling from a few decades of living here in Washington. If you think something differently you certainly could be right. The weather around here is very unpredictable.
