The heir to a property in Normandy moved in only to find his forebear had hidden 100kg of gold coins, bars and ingots around the house, which he has just sold for 3.5m.
The unnamed individual made the incredible discovery after inheriting the plush home in Evreux, a town south of Rouen.
He started looking around the house to work out what his relation had left behind, and was stunned at what he found, according to the auction house of Evreux, which sold the entire collection.
There were 5,000 gold pieces, two 12-kilo gold bars and 37 ingots each weighing one kilo, said Nicolas Fierfort, auctioneer at the Evreux maison de ventes (auction house).
The fabulous, unexpected family fortune was stuffed all over the house, he told AFP.
...the heir stands to lose half the amount, as under French law inheritance tax stands at 45 per cent and he will also have to pay wealth tax if the deceased relation failed to do so in the last three years of life, said Le Dépêche.

His first mistake was to tell people, especially the government.
This could be Nazi loot from WWII, in which case he won’t get to keep any of it.
Greedy socialists ruining another feel good story.
Yeah. I learned from that story about someone finding a bunch of uncirculated american gold coins that had been stolen from the FedGov a century or so ago. They had to give them back.
If you find stuff like this, melt it down and fence it at the pawn shop. In small pieces.
Did you all notice the question of whether or not the relative had paid the ‘Wealth Tax”? Many Socialist countries ask your total worth and tax you a certain percentage on what you have.......even though you have paid tax on that money.....over and over and over....
Yup. Loose lips....
$2 Mil to the gov’t?
I’d have found a way.
Ya know, drive to Swiss bank, open an numbered account, sell it over time, cash in a home vault....
Why would he tell people about this???
Good point. The person who hid it did so to keep it out of the hands of statist, leftist, thieving national socialists, while the person who turned it in is putting it in the hands of statist, leftist, thieving national socialists.
Make jewelry and sell it at swap meets.
“Make jewelry and sell it at swap meets.”
Yeah! Put a chain on a 2.2 pound ingot and wear it around your neck!
Yeah. Its called “bling” nowadays.
Shut Up.
Second Thing?
Shut Up.
Third thing?
Find an extremely good lawyer, well versed in tax and inheritance law, because the state and anyone who can spell "gold" will be coming after you. Make sure that he knows how to Shut Up.
Why do people announce these findings? Haven’t they heard enough stories about the government just coming in and confiscating new found treasures? It’s gold. Melt it in to easily traded blobs.
Maybe Kelly stashed his loot in that house.
Make molds of car parts and transport over to Switzerland. Goldfinger has a great system.
