Syracuse, N.Y. -- It's been snowing for 38 straight hours in Syracuse, and there's more to come.
The National Weather Service station at Hancock International Airport has been recording snow since 3 a.m. Sunday, when rain switched over to light snow.
From then until 4 p.m. today, at least 18.9 inches of snow has fallen, and Syracuse could get another 4 inches.

Yeah, I remember that one.
But it didn’t hit NYC.
That’s where the votes for the devil came from.
The area this storm hit is pretty solidly red.
:/
NYS can be breathtaking in many areas and especially in the fall.
But now?
Not so much.
That’s fun!
My favorite East-Coast town name is ‘Bird-in-Hand’, PA, which was named for a tavern sign:

I always prep for winter.
But this year, knowing that the storm was coming and would keep people from shopping for Thanksgiving until today, I did my Thanksgiving shopping Friday, when it was beautiful and gorgeous out and the stores were virtually deserted.
I grew up in the Buffalo area and then moved to CNY when I got married.
Lived in the snow belt for too long and moved somewhat south after that.
Now sometimes we get the edge of a nor-easter, sometimes a few inches from lake effect, but never saw or expected to see this much from lake effect this far from the lakes.
Yes, I see on the radar.
There are several distinct bands now instead of one amorphous blob covering the state.
There have been times that Fort Drum has sent out tanks to pull their town’s massive plows out of ditches cause the plows even get stuck in this stuff.
That’s why snowmobiles are so popular in the North Country.
So much for the yard work!
And, here we are (in SE TX) moaning over warm temps (72º)....from our recent cooler temps.
Stay safe and warm!!
And perseverance. I remember one particular storm in PA where we got layers of ice and snow. Shoveling was near impossible at one point.
I finished that up Sat afternoon as I watched the clouds very slowly and ominously rolling in.
My all time favorite!
Any ski areas near there? They’ll be pleased!
Yes there are and I’m sure they are.
I don’t have any idea if they were making snow or not, it would have been spitting into the wind with the snowfall rates we got, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were open.
The temperatures are supposed to warm up to hit 40 every day but there’s enough of a snow pack that they can open for Thanksgiving weekend and get an early start on the year.
40 days and 40 nights od snow.
Have you you guys built an Artic Ark?
Global Warming....?
I’ve never been west of the furthest western part of PA; but something about the southwest and the desert has always intrigued me. Maybe it’s because I’m a ‘hot house plant’, and hate to be cold; or just all the stars you must see in the desert.
I was able to get to see a good deal of the country through work. However, now that I have retired, I take a lot of car trips. I think I am at about 13,500 miles for this year alone.
We have kids, grandkids, siblings and friends in a number of far flung locations so we visit them and the areas that surround them each. I suggest that if you want to see some stars, also try mountainous areas where the air is thinner and you are far from a city. The Appalachians are cloudy but that is not always the case. Next year in August we have an eclipse in the offing. It has a path of totality that you can get through on a days drive.
See

and find a place near the path of totality to visit next August— it seems the most arid area is in Wyoming but don’t restrict yourself to that.

The Sunbird thing looks great to me too. It's true we have great weather in Florida during the winters, but the summers are brutal.
Wow! Thank You!
I’m fond of eclipses - the first one I recall was probably in the late ‘fifties (1959 ?) when my father took me with him when he went to the barber, and we stood outside and watched things darken. It was the first time I heard the word.
