A teenage stabbing suspect, who was fatally shot by a Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputy, had taken LSD.
Investigators showed video of what their body cameras recorded the night of the shooting.
Luke Smith, 15, took LSD with a friend late Friday. He started having adverse effects and turned hostile and violent.
The Watsonville teenager stabbed his father and uncle at their house.
The deputy who fired his weapon has been put on leave and a review board will examine this case.
Body camera footage shows a deputy using a Taser, sponge rounds and a K9 officer on the teenager before finally opening fire. His devastated family says he bought tainted drugs that triggered a violent reaction.
"They started shouting, 'sir drop the knife,'" said witness Alex Santana Jr.
Santana Jr. watched from his window as Santa Cruz County Sheriff's deputies tried to diffuse the situation. Body camera video shows the officers using non lethal force six times with little to no impact.
"It didn't seem like the first two blanks that were shot worked because he was stunned, but he continued to withstand and not drop the knife," said Santana Jr.
Finally a K9 was released and Luke raised his knife and was shot. The sheriff's department arrested the drug dealers who sold Smith the LSD.
Flowers now line the fence along Pioneer Road. Smith attended Aptos High School. Counselors and emotional psychologists were on campus.
"We're going into all the classrooms to help support students and teachers," said superintendent Michelle Rodriguez. "And we will continue to provide the support that is necessary as the students are coming forward.
Friends have set up a GoFundMe site to raise money for the family.
Santa Cruz, one nasty place after the sun goes down. You can visit the beach in the day. Was very surprised to see nothing but stoned kids everywhere and they are very aggressive.
So what’s your bright recommendation? Every less lethal option was used and failed. They absolutely shouldn’t risk getting stabbed to save his less valuable life.
Furthermore, time matters so you can get to his previous victims and assist them.
This story is written like this: a man who is wearing a hat pulls out a pistol and aims it at a cop; the cop pulls his gun and drops him.
Resulting headline: “Cop Suspended After Shooting Hat-Wearing Man.”
So shows the video.
Exactly. The active danger must be neutralized, and nothing else was working to do it. End of story. Bath Salts,PCP, Meth and Spice present the same picture.
Edgar: You did the right thing by calling us. Does your brother sleep a lot?— The Lost Boys (which was set in Santa Cruz, although they used a different name in the movie)Sam: Yeah, all day.
Alan: Does the sunlight freak him out?
Sam: Uh, he wears sunglasses in the house.
Edgar: Bad breath, long fingernails?
Sam: Yeah, his fingernails are a little bit longer, um, he always had bad breath though.
Alan: He's a vampire all right.
Edgar: All right, here's what you do, get your self a good sharp stake and drive it right through his heart.
Sam: I can't do that, he's my brother.
Alan: Okay, we'll come over and do it for you.
Sam: No!
Edgar: You'd better get yourself a garlic T-shirt, buddy, or it's your funeral.
They weren’t able to ask for his ID while he was trying to kill their police dog. 15 year old’s can kill ya’, I swear they can.
If you have all that you will rule Chicago
I dont know tis specific situation but Police HAVE to use standoff tactics today since The Job has been feminized. Many “cops” have no hope of handling this sort of thing after standoff stuff has failed except to draw and fire,
Ignore him brother. I suspect he is rather tone deaf to the human condition.....3, 2, 1....
Really? It’s always been that way.
Just go and chillax...
LOL
Dork...that was funny though....
OMG. Forgot about that line.
Had a couple friends in that movie. Bit parts.
Was some sort of time limit reached and then out come the bullets?
Have you ever been seriously cut with a knife.
I have and 12 years later I still have physical effects from the cut.
I am not talking about cuts the a few stiches well sew up but the need for major surgery to repair.
Knifes can and well cause serious bodily harm or death is just one cut.
Feel free to try and take knife away using just your hands. It is not like the movies.
Hey Luke, drugs kill you. Sorry, but Luke should have used better judgement - like smarter friends who don’t do drugs.
Go find a training facility where you can do a Tueller driil. Get back to us with the results. My bet is that you die every time.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tueller_Drill
I’ve done that drill. Good times. Did it with a Red Man, too.
Anyone who thinks they can fight a man with a knife on lsd or meth who has already stabbed two ppl is inexperienced.
Very sobering experience for me the first time I did it. The instructor even let me draw first and I still died. The last time I did it (two years ago) we used simunitions and rated hits. Lethal hits with a handgun that stop the aggressor cold are hard to come by. Almost need a CNS shot to stop them from getting to you.
It’s so odd. I’ve never been shot by a cop.
Then again, I don’t do drugs and I don’t disobey police orders.
Could be just a co-incidence...
