Okay engineers, tell me what you think. (environmental magic, or more hype?)

WaterSeer™ condenses pure water from the air without power or chemicals. It is green, sustainable, simple, low-maintenance, easily deployed and scalable for any community. VICI-Labs worked with UC Berkeley and the National Peace Corps Association to develop a device that yields up to 37 liters of pure water a day! A WaterSeer™

If the dewpoint of the air is higher than the temperature of the ground, you get condensation. No brainer.

That's 3,285,000 people a year. Is that possible ? Sad if it is.

Most of that is from water borne diseases like cholera.

Yes, it will condense water in the underground bulb, for a while. But, once the ground surrounding the bulb heats up from the process of condensation and hot air, the process will stop. Maybe at night, the soil around the bulb will cool down from the night cold air. It is not a pipe dream, but after a few days, I would expect the process to be very inefficient compared to the claimed results.

Waterseer Busted

Waterseer -why did Berkeley disclaim it?

This guy comes down on Waterseer pretty hard.

His basic argument is thermodynamic. In order to condense the amount of water they are claiming to recover every day, the subsurface soil would have to absorb an amount of heat that would quickly raise its temperature to a level too high to condense any water at all.

I see some problems with the amount of air flow you could get through the round-trip path through those long thin tubes with the slow-turning single-stage fan that purports to make it work. Also the problem of maintaining finely-made bearings in the hostile desert environment strikes me as problematic, at least at any sort of reasonable cost.

Beware! Looks like a scam.

My first reaction is .... possible, but....

1) can cool metal condense water out of the air. Yes, but you need a cool metal - I am thinking that you would need to be closer to 10’ down. And the wetter the air, the more the water is likely to condense.

2) you do need to move the air and the helix turbine would be able to direct the air flow so again, possible.... but, the volume of air in a dry arid region would be substantial.

3) So you would be cooling the air below the dew point to get the water out of the air. The ground temp would average about 60 degrees F. Many of these arid conditions have a relative humdity that is low 20 to 40 percent. Not sure how much water you could get out of the air.

4)”up to 31 liters” (9+ gallons). Well, up to includes .1 liters as well. So yeah, possible but that is not enough water to sustain one person.

Enough of an Idea to test

More ‘magic’ from high tech.

Solar and wind power come to mind - but the sun goes behind the clouds and the wind power kills all the birds and yada yada yada.

Everyone’s looking for miracles.

...If that was true, the arid countries without water would have no people now...

People are constantly being replenished by unskilled labor which enjoys the work. Even in arid areas.

I suspect a lot more people die from dirty water than from total lack of water.

It is a fraud. Thunderf00t on YouTube has done some good videos regarding it.

Amazing if true.

Comes under the heading of plausible under the right set of environmental conditions but impracticle.

Probably oversold as well.

We operate a 30 hp compressor in 80% humidity with a condensing dryer that removes water from the air via refrigeration to give a dew point of -20C.

The specified 37 litres per day of water is about 10 gallons and our compressor is not giving us 10 gallons of water condensate per day with a 30 hp compressor flow so I doubt that a tiny 3 ft diameter wind turbine circulation system is going to give more water from the air.

A simple solar still is probably more practical, effective and efficient and much simpler and cost effective. .

So this is what I don't understand:

“Since WaterSeer™ uses the difference in the ground and air temperature, which requires no power to achieve, WaterSeer™ effectiveness is not based on Relative Humidity, as with other, energy intensive, condensation devices.”

It seems to state air humidity is not relevant to this device. It is simply a temperature differential which creates water and the water is free from impurities from air.

“As pure, distilled water, it is cleaner than tap water without any additives, impurities, or chemicals of any kind.”

They make it sound like it is a pristine, virtual vacuum container that creates water from hydrogen and oxygen.

“I suspect a lot more people die from dirty water than from total lack of water.”

Dirty water is much easier to fix.

I may actually buy one of these devices - it’s cheap. If anything, I have a yard ornament with it’s roots 6 feet under.

Yeah, it’s gotta be modeled on the psychrometric chart, there’s no way around that. The salesmen imply that it uses a completely different mechanism than anybody has ever thought of. Not buying that.

It’s not hard to see where this is going. Send me $134 now and I’ll send you a WaterSeer later, trust me!! In the year 2030, you’ll still be waiting for your home version of the kit along with your neighbor who invested in cold-fusion.
