I saw one in grande titons national park scratching his back on a branch about ten feet up.
Fairly alarming and impressive at the same time. Thing was gigantic.
I couldn't trust their judgment, so I'd go out to *test* the ice...well, we wandered down to the dam, shallow, clear ice and found a doe frozen under the ice. It transfixed us. Don't know if she had [maybe] been hit by a car, got stuck in some shallow slush on the edge ...but there she was frozen in time.
Strange. Danged fascinating.
Poor moose a besieged by insects that itch them; they can develop a brain worm disease and usually suffer an awful death.
