Weekly Cooking (and related issues) Thread

Posted on 11/17/2016 4:35:04 PM PST by Jamestown1630

Especially at this time of year, I’m a fan of ‘finger food’ that can be made ahead, frozen, and ready in just minutes in the event of impromptu visitors. Nothing fits this bill better than the Gougere, a light savory ‘puff’ of cheesy pastry that goes wonderfully with cocktails and freezes very well. There are many variations on the Gougere, but this one is basic and classic:

Last Thanksgiving, I took the advice of Freeper ‘boatbums’, and we dry-brined our turkey for the first time; it really was the best turkey we’ve had, even though we made the mistake of letting it go at 450 degrees for nearly the entire cooking time! So I thought I’d post again the link to the instructions we used. I’ve never eaten turkey breast meat that turned out as moist and succulent as last year’s turkey did, so we’re going to do it again this year:

Lastly, a recipe I found today and haven’t tried, but which looks like another very interesting ‘finger food’ for parties, and perfect for Thanksgiving: ROSEMARY PECAN GOAT CHEESE TRUFFLES, from thecafesucrefarine.com, a really nice husband-wife cooking blog:

I hope that everyone enjoys a very happy and meaningful Thanksgiving. We have a lot to be grateful for this year.

My aunt used to buy preserves in tall glasses with scenes of historic Virginia buildings on them. Somehow ‘Old Dominion’ sticks in my mind as the name of the company. When they were empty, they made very nice iced-tea glasses.

I keep hoping to find some in thrift stores, but have never seen them.

My suggestion, is to try *estate sales* ...I've been seeing a lot of that kind o thing lately. Vintage is where it's at, lots of tag sales with that age person who is passing, or going into nursing homes. :)

I recall a collection of tall drinking glasses with the history of the presidents on them; red, white and blue; for some reason, I think roasted peanuts came in them; mom had the whole collection. When we dissolved her estate no one wanted them....where are you going to put all that stuff?

I'll bet I'm the only FReeper who still has her [worthless] Klondike Big Inch Land Co. deeds from Quaker cereals.

I would *fight* over them with my brother. Somehow we thought if we amassed enough of them, we'd have enough to at least stand on a square foot of land in the Yukon. The idea enthralled us ....Sargent Preston and his dog, Yukon King protecting the North country. My goodness. We fell, hook, line and sinker.

LOL! You and your brother needed a syndicate :-)

I don’t remember that one, and had to look it up:

(I hope you have that framed!)

I should. It’s stuffed in a drawer, somewhere.

I laugh now, but the notion of cereal *shot from guns* had such appeal to us. We loved to see things explode. [Normal all-American kids] growing up in the best of times.

You just reminded me of the baking powder and vinegar rockets that we used to shoot off:

Don’t recall those ;-)

But I had a whole Annie Oakley getup, with fancy silver guns that ‘fired’ caps. (Can you even buy those anymore?)

Cap guns, jack knives...we all carried them, girlz & boyz.

Yes, you can get them through Archie Mc Phee’s in Seattle or this place :
https://www.tintoyarcade.com/cowboy-paper-roll-caps-refill.html

Careful though; if they are “old” vintage caps; they may not shoot b/c the gunpowder is old/compromised.

I’ve seen them at tag sales ...they want $8/roll...too much moolah, IMO

This looks like the rocket kit my dad bought me in mid fifties...amazing!

... and yes, cap pistols are still being sold along with caps... a box of cap rolls and a favorite rock, every day carry in the third grade along with a pocket knife and string.

;>) good times

How wondeful!

Roy Rogers here....all the way!

Dale Evans, not so much, b/c she wasn't shown *shooting*.

Yep, still have my cap guns.

And that looks like the old science-fictiony type of rocket model I was trying to find recently - I found it:

But I have to build the Area 51 Saucer, first:

We’re not ‘old as dirt’, Daffy. We’re in our second childhoods ;-)

Did you play mumbltey-peg with your pocket knife?

We used to play barefoot.

I wish I still had those pistols - they had all the lacy ‘etching’ or engraving on them.

But I was generally pretty ‘girly’ - still have all of my many hundreds of paper dolls. I just wish I still had the T. Cohn dollhouse:

Great memories! I don’t think kids now have the kind of fun we had.

I grew up with all boys in the neighborhood ...so you can imagine, I had to know all the best wrestling holds, how to play dodge ball like a champ and be a bulls-eye shooter.

My mother and aunties bought me dollies....but never played with them ...I was surprised the thousands they brought at a vintage doll auction [still in original boxes]. WOOOT!

I’ve given up on downsizing. When I retire, we’re upsizing. Need more room for hobbies and critters.

Thanks for a fun conversation!

Speaking of paper dolls, I was so anxious until my mother's McCall magazine arrived.....loved to cut out the Besty McCall paper dolls page each month; that was for rainy days only.
