Here is a letter sent out to University of Michigan students from students4justice. This is my first post so bare with me:)
"Placing us in the polices care is an act of violence, especially for Black students."
This safety must not depend on the Universitys police. The police, as a union, has endorsed Trump. Placing us in the polices care is an act of violence, especially for Black students.
The University must protect its students, instead, by dramatically increasing financial aid, emergency funds, health care resources, health insurance grants, and discretionary funds available to low-income students. It must create and/or dramatically increase funding for community centers for people of color and marginalized students. It must increase funding for Student Psychological Services and hire new therapists that are of color and specialize in engaging in race-related mental concerns. It must increase its acceptance of Palestinian international students and protect its Palestinian students from the state-sanctioned genocide which is about to escalate.
Students of color also often have other marginalized identities that we cannot separate from their existence. These identities come with their own struggles exacerbated by white supremacy and we make demands on their behalf too.
The University must provide trans students with healthcare respectful of their humanity and agency. The University must provide a variety of affordable health insurance options which are able to meet the needs of all students..
The University must ease requirements for verification of disability in providing accommodations to students.
The University must regard dismissal and derision of marginalized students needs as violence. The safety of the Universitys students must be priority in any fundraising, donations, or implementations of new funds - before building new buildings, sports arenas, and the like. Attacks, verbal and physical harassment, and bullying must be taken seriously. The students must be protected.
The University must remove symbols and remove/change names of symbols of white supremacy on this campus. Clarence Cook Little, also known as C.C. Little, was a known eugenicist. James B. Angell is the writer of the Angell Treaty limiting Chinese immigration to the United States, preceding the Chinese Exclusion Act. There are symbols of white supremacy on our campus that are upheld until today. These two men are used to name buildings, our largest public transport station, and even scholarships and honors awards.
The University must be a place of sanctuary for undocumented students and their families, and must welcome Muslim immigrants.
The University can provide legal services, attempt to claim jurisdiction, and identify undocumented students as international students, and more, to protect its students. Financial aid must be dramatically increased towards this cause and for these students.
The University must double its commitment to rejecting racial harassment and protecting its students of color. The students must be protected. One step the University could take is to create/increase funding for a Social Justice Peer Education program to run race-based educational workshops for the campus. We understand that IGR is a department that focuses on this, but it needs to be more than a conversation that people have to self-select into. Secondly, we need to see actual protection and safety measures. What is the benefit of reporting hate crimes aside from telling the targets of this violence that they should avoid those areas?
We need to see more comprehensive protection. We need to see plans, services that the University offers, etc. One could be to increase SafeRide beyond its current time, and increase multiple services like this.
The University must divest from unethical corporations that profit from human rights abuses inflicted against people of color. Students of color should not be forced to contribute to their own oppression by paying their tuition dollars that, in turn, is used to invest in corporations that violate the human rights of people of color. Black and brown students are forced to invest into the prison industrial complex, border violence, fossil fuel industry, and colonialism and apartheid in Palestine. The university/college must divest.
The University of Michigan must protect its Black students. The University of Michigan must increase the percentage of African American students to match the domestic percentage with a focus on Black students who have heritage in American slavery.
The University of Michigan must provide funding and paid staffing positions for a Black space on campus specifically designed as a recreational and safe space for Black people at the University.
The University must offer more academic support services for Black students. Resources for protecting Black students cannot be channeled to University police. The police, as a union, has endorsed Trump. Placing us in the polices care is an act of anti-Black violence.
The University must issue an official statement detailing its dedication to the protection of, specifically, its students of color. This statement must acknowledge white supremacy and racism, and it must assert itself on the side of its students of color. It must be explicit, and it cannot conflate calling out structural violence with the structural violence itself (RE: the email sent by the President). We need an official apology that can go out to all the students, apologizing personally for the misspelling that was a complete invalidation of hijabi students experiences of violence on this campus.
People are afraid for their lives.

You’ve already met some of the posting police, so I’ll just say welcome to FR.
That's what Carlos Danger said...
It's doubtful that these slushheads even know what a "paragraph" is.
No you didn't. You jumped on a newbie. Publicly. You could have sent him a link to the HTML guide in a private message. Instead you ridiculed him. FR should be a better place than that.
Now I feel fully justified in not answering the phone when those nitwits in Ann Arbor call looking for money. Perhaps, if I am feeling particularly cranky, I will answer next time and read back to them that illiterate pile of garbage above.
I weep for my alma mater.
Wow! Dead wrong from sentence one.
The primary job of a university is to educate its students, not protect then. Personal protection is a personal responsibility.
LOL. Literally. Oh man.
I ridiculed him? LOL ...upyourz.
*** It’s doubtful that these slushheads even know what a “paragraph” is. ***
That’s because the priority of the University is to protect their “safety” (their feelings in this case) - rather than to provide them with an education.
I thought the University of Michigan had high standards. I guess the author has good punctuation but the text is mindless.
Not to mention the fact that most of us have no business whatsoever subjecting others to our nekkid bodies.
Looks like segregation to me.

Do the letters F.O. mean anything to you?
I agree.
Yes, jkos4freedom1 refer to the html guide for formatting help. But if you're unsure of anything, send me a private message and I'll be glad to help.
Well bless their little hearts.
If it’s such a hell on earth for them, why did they apply in the first place and still remain?
Egads. At first I was upset because the “no paragraphs” mess the noob posted was impossible to read. Now I’m even more upset at having read a couple lines of the drek the author churned out. What childish writing.
We should prepare to be even more upset with the university says “OK” to that ridiculous list of demands.
I hope that this nonsense represents the warped views of a tiny insignificant minority of students at this university. If this is how a majority of them think, we are so screwed.
