The explanation that you posted is somewhat more likely than the others. There are plenty of cases where cargo can shift suddenly, the ship turns turtle and sinks very quickly.
I don’t get to be in a boat much, once a year at best. Relatives have a place on Lake Geneva,WI and they have a classic old wood boat, under 20 feet long. I do enjoy a nice tour around Lake Geneva in that old boat. I noticed that this year when I went, I automatically said where’s my life preserver. With old age, comes wisdom. Ha Ha.
Same theory I have, although instead of loose natch covers I think she bottomed out and began taking on water that way.

Oh thank you. It was a long time ago, around 1973. Makes a life long impression on a kid to come out of the farm house basement and every other building is flat. Huge mess. My poor parents. They carried quite a burden of grief that they didn’t show. We just all got to work cleaning it up and rebuilding. I am grateful they didn’t fall apart in our presence. We felt safe and protected, even though not much was left. God spared our old farm house. We had a place to live.

That’s the way I read it. The song makes it seem like the ship was in a slow prolonged death fight but it was in reality sudden.
