Rubber balls.
Bobby Vee came to fame when he replaced Buddy Holly at the national guard armory in Moorhead, MN in 1957 after Buddy
was killed in the plane crash. The plane left Iowa and was heading to Hector Airport in Fargo, ND.
Gene Pitney wrote Bobby Vee’s hit “Rubber Ball”.
GP also wrote Rick Nelson’s “Hello Mary Lou” and “He’s a Rebel” for the Crystals.
Bobby Vee brought Bob Dylan into his backing band to play piano at $15 per gig in 1959. Dylan could only play in the key of C. The relationship didn’t last too long, and Dylan went on to enroll in the University of Minnesota. Dylan always remembered Bobby’s gesture and paid tribute to him in a 2013 concert, when Bobby was in the audience, by singing the song “Suzie Baby.”
Isn’t that something. Thanks.
