CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs have won the pennant for the first time since 1945, and now they'll endeavor to win the World Series for the first time since way, way back yonder in 1908. What's behind that? Cruel randomness, serialized misfortune, and occasional lousiness. Mythos, though, would have it that something darker has prevented the Cubs from reaching the pinnacle of the sport for lo these many years.

Go Cleveland!
Very odd indeed. I’m going to remember not to insult a Greek with a pet billy goat just to be safe.
The cause was actually the Wrigley family’s refusal to install lighting in Wrigley Field. The Cubs had to play many more day games than the rest of the league as a result, and day games are more tiring — especially for pitchers.
It’s a one in 365 chance to fall on the same day. Really less since baseball is only played 7 months of the year and playoffs are only a month. That said, it seems like more than coincidence. Sort of like Founders dying on the 4th of July. Some things are more than coincidence.
Please, Cleveland, please please please keep the curse going. Cubs fans are insufferable now, imagine if they win. Rip their hearts out in game 7 so they know that the curse lives.
LOL—a good friend of mine is related to the Sianis family.
It was a crass publicity stunt on the part of the tavern owner. He brought a pet goat to Wrigley Field telling people that the Cubs had the Tigers’ goat (Chicago was leading the Series 2-1 at the time, but lost in seven games).
Sianis was removed from the ballpark during Game 4 of the World Series. If his hex was so effective, how was it that the Cubs won Game 6 of the same series two days later?
The Billy Goat Tavern used to be a favorite watering hole of newspaper employees when the print media was thriving. They helped perpetuate this myth and the Cubs on field futility kept the story going on for decades.
Flip flopping Hillary later claimed to be a life long fan of the New York Yankees to garner votes.
She will say or do anything.
Two words: Theo Epstein.
“Flip flopping Hillary later claimed to be a life long fan of the New York Yankees to garner votes.
She will say or do anything.”
She only said that in a stressful moment; while under sniper fire as a young female Marine.
As I recall, there is a line in a Statler Brothers song about “when the lights go on at Wrigley Field” (among other impossible events). Obviously an old song—they have been performing for more than 50 years.
The curse was for future World Series. It didn't apply to the existing one.
Did also work retroactively? The Chicago Cubs had lost seven straight World Series match ups prior to 1945.
Dad said that you would never lose too much money wagering against Chicago teams in big games.
As such, that's why the Cubs--when they built their brand-new clubhouse that opened at the start of the 2016 season--installed "mood lighting" throughout most of the clubhouse. That way, the players can adjust their biological clocks so they play better in the daytime or at night. The result: 103 regular-seaon victories and now the first trip to the World Series in 71 years.
