Vanity, a couple of baseball questions.

I haven't watched baseball since Curt Flood. I am watching tonight. I was a diehard Dodgers fan when they Drysdale and Koufax. Are they not using wood bats anymore ? The bats have strange color and make a different sound than what I used to hear. When did they start wearing their pants that droop over their shoes?

You have watched baseball in over 40 years? That's nothing. I haven't watched since the dead ball era. Once they started juicing balls at the end of the First World War, that was it for me.

Vin Scully is retiring after 67 years in the Dodger booth. Amazing. Cubs are going to the World Series. Amazing. Indians have been in first place since May 15. Amazing. There is something interesting in every baseball game. Wood bats are still used although Maple splinters and causes problems. The stirrups in sox are worn by the shortstop on the Indians and looks cool. Wrigley Field celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2009. Amazing.

Kershaw was off from the beginning. I’m surprised they kept him in so long. But happy they did.

If Dracula turns into a bat and gets his fill of blood from someones neck, when he turns back into Dracula, wouldn’t he still be hungry?

Only if the victim was Chinese because you're always hungry an hour later.

I think it’s the sound systems they use.

That is easily the best description of America’s game I think I’ve ever heard.

“Baseball still remains the greatest game ever devised. At least in my opinion. It is better than the owners that own it, and the players that play it.”

Agreed.

I can’t believe there is not a live thread on this historic game.

I used to have a couple bats that my dad used in the 30s (minor leagues). I remember them being big lumber, and one was painted black. Somewhere I had his contracts. Printed on heavy paper stock. About a half page each. 10 or 11 sentences with fill in the blanks. Name, salary etc.

Probably a little different now. He made 50 dollars more a month for each step up the ladder. Big time was 500 a month with a 500 signing bonus for his very brief time in the bigs.

Thanks to all for the nice thoughts.

I love writing and am an author - a weird one. An electrical engineer who should have been a mechanical engineer who has a degree in English lit. and Psychology. 3 more courses and I’d have a degree in Physics!

But I love baseball and this time of year.

And I’m really excited to see the Cubs finally going! Go Cubs! (barring a miracle comeback by the Dodgers....)

I remember those cards. Many were cut off the backs of cereal boxes. I was a serious kid collector back then.. What American boy did not know rbis, avg, and the next game time for reception on the transistor radio. Dynomaite!
