Would You Be The Hero During A Rampage Shooting?

USA –-(Ammoland.com)- This appears to be one of the most talked about situations, as far as concealed carry is concerned.

For this, I don’t believe there is a simple answer. But this is what I tell those who ask.

My job, my one and only job, the only thing I’m worrying about is to keep me and mine safe. That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less. If shooting starts, living in Condition Yellow I know where exits are. I know where elevators, staircases and escalators are.

And I’m getting me and mine out. Period.

Now that may sound crass to many. It may sound cold and detached, but that’s it in a nutshell – and I don’t owe anyone an explanation.

Everyone has the ability to defend themselves. As a matter of fact, it’s your personal responsibility to defend yourself – not mine, not the Police, not the Governments – it’s yours.

Now with that being said, after my family and friends are safe, then the decision to take on a shooter would depend on the circumstances at that time – and at that time they may be undefinable.

It is possible that an active shooter / rampage shooter situation could break out right in front of you and there may be an opportunity to end it right there – but what if you miss and are shot, how will your spouse, your children, your grandchildren make it to safety? Or will they be mowed down with the others?

The only situation I believe I would run into headlong, is an active shooter at a school (or anyplace children were present) where I know the Police have not arrived. Then?

I’m in. Devil be damned.

Stay Safe and Carry Responsibly,
Hipshot – NewGunnerJournal.

Who knows how they will react, until the time comes.

I know James Yeager is controversial, but he makes an important point about two types of active shooter: 1) disgruntled loner “school shooter” type vs 2) jihadist mass murderer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prS_QpGIB8Q&feature=youtu.be

Yeager makes the point that when the “school shooter” meets any armed resistance, they almost always just shoot themselves.

By contrast, the jihadist will fight to the death. They may kill themselves, but only by a suicide bomb when they can take more with them.

The risks to a concealed carrier engaging a “school shooter” vs a jihadist are very different.

I think I know myself pretty well. Somehow I don’t see myself charging into someone who is actually sending rounds into the surrounding environment. 1) Concealment as best possible while looking for 2) cover while looking for 3) better cover 4) while looking for exit to 5) Safety. Trying as best possible to be aware of source of rounds and decisions about better cover. Engaging is what you do to continue process 1 through 5.

Trotting into a firefight is for heroes. Notice most CMH awards are posthumous.

“Who knows how they will react, until the time comes.”

I believe that’s the correct answer.

This one sentence is why I posted this article. It explains my thoughts about the situation. “My job, my one and only job, the only thing I’m worrying about is to keep me and mine safe.”

Nobody will pay my medical, legal or funeral costs if I was to rush in with a superhero attitude. I am not a paid LEO so I don’t consider protecting society as one of my duties.

Extremely unlikely.

Don’t know what I’ll be doing during it, but I have a pretty good idea what I’ll be doing after -if I survived:

Throwing up.
Going into shock.
Calling Second Call Defense.

You gotta be packin’. Use the confusion to your advantage. Shoot, then run. Don’t get involved afterwords. Most mall cops couldn’t fight their way out of a paper bag. They will be useless.

I’m always armed. Even at home.
I’m never more than 2 seconds away from having a firearm in my hands.

I agree. The difference between a concealed carry permit and a police badge is a sworn duty to “protect and serve.”

Involvement in an active shooting situation is optional. I would try to defend others as well as myself, but unless confronted by the shooter or saw something that made me change my mind, I would retreat. Maybe if brave and safe, I might cause a diversion (firing a safe shot from a distance and cover with no one behind) in the shooter's direction.

MY CPL is not a commitment to protect and serve anyone besides myself and those I love. If people want to be safe they need to take responsibility for their own safety an get their own CPL

This isn’t a gun question. It’s a spiritual question.

You either believe that “love one another” thing Jesus said, and see everyone as your family, or you don’t.

Nothing else need be said.

Every situation is different, but some may argue that you have a moral obligation to prevent something bad from happening if you have the means and opportunity to do so.

There is far too many fools, idiots and Muslims in this world for me to see everyone as my family.

I’m 70 not 20. My days of firefights are hopefully done with.

I would agree with that. I would hope that I would respond to others being attacked. Why else carry?

The primary factor would be whether I was alone or with family. Family comes first, so I wouldn’t engage if I felt it would endanger them more.

When I am on my cardio walk, I carry a really large heavy walking staff. When it comes up, I always say, I’m too old to run from dogs.
