This is normally a light hearted event where both sides get together with the press, put the weapons down and engage in some light hearted ribbing. Trump did exactly the right thing in lighting a torch to the whole event. He`s supposed to get together with the crimminal and her co-conspirators in the press and act like everythings normal? Hell no.
This dinner is a tradition that started in an earlier time when both candidates could disagree but at least adhered to a code of ethics, and when the press also had integrity and ethics.
Hers came across as softer because everyone knew they were based on BS (Russians, Trump not paying contractors, etc.). His jokes were painful because everyone knew they were based in truth.
You’re right, the real audience LOVED what Trump had to say and was cheering him on like I was. My heart was pounding with adrenaline as he kept on like a prize fighter, one jab after another, until it was a TKO! Finally we have a fighter on our side.

Obama at the Al Smith dinner in 2008 gave a horrible speech, McCain was good.

I have to give Hillary credit. She had some funny zingers and generally had a good rapport. She also looked better than she has for a long time.

Well put, thx. He’s learned a lot about many people he’s known, sadly. He likely has a lot more connection now to everyday working folks. I don’t think he tolerates two-faced players much any more, and has learned there’s a whole lot of them. Many were in that room tonight.
Hitlery deserves a lot more than a few minutes of discomfort for all the destruction she’s caused to America and the world.

Exactly right. And the fact is that she could rightfully, and without any apologies, be publicly shamed, rebuked, and harshly criticized by every honest person in America, but obviously the only one with the courage to do it is DONALD JOHN TRUMP.
She deserves everything that comes her way.
