John Hancock was known to go down to the docks to meet the ships coming to post so he could check their cargo for fine brocades and silks. And he was not buying for the missus.

It was a dandified era, the 18th century, for people of means at least it was. Powdered wigs and men dolled up almost as much if not more so than the women.
