A suspect has died after being shot by two police officers in Concord following the stabbing of a man as well as a police canine who responded to the scene, a police spokesman said.
Officers responded at about 2 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a stabbing in the 2900 block of Crawford Street, Concord police spokesman Cpl. Christopher Blakely said.
About a half-hour later, officers located the suspect in the backyard of a home not associated with him in the 1400 block of San Jose Avenue, near Prospect Street and only a block from the Concord BART station.
After giving the suspect orders to surrender, officers sent a police canine named Jelle in to try to subdue the suspect, who used some sort of garden shears to stab the dog in the face, Blakely said.
Blakely said he didn't yet have the details about what happened next, but two officers shot the suspect, who was taken to a hospital with multiple gunshot wounds and later died.
The victim in the initial stabbing, which involved a weapon other than the shears, is in stable condition at a hospital, he said.
Blakely said the suspect, a man in his 30s whose name is not yet being released, had prior contacts with police. He didn't immediately know more details about the initial stabbing, which occurred outside of a home.
The police dog Jelle is being treated at a veterinary hospital and will be OK, he said.
The two officers who shot the man both had more than 10 years of experience with the Police Department and are being interviewed about the incident by investigators, Blakely said. While what immediately preceded the shooting remains under investigation, Blakely said the fact that the dog was stabbed would not by itself warrant an officer to open fire.
"As much as we love our dogs, a police canine is not considered an officer," he said. "Officers aren't going to shoot just because the dog is getting stabbed."
I can agree with that, but then it would seem in either case you will be heading to jail....
Is it unreasonable to suppose the perp, who is now dead, has an identity? Is it racist or sexist or just ist to inquire?
Especially because he used stabbing weapons in each incident, a strong indication that he was a Mudslime performing an Islamic sacrament.
Then you have no damned sense. That or any dog deserves more respect that that piece of trash you are so worried about. But go ahead and posture so we can all see how tough and cold you are.
10 to 1 the human victim was more deserving than the dog.
What if the dog is ‘undercover’?
Or maybe a dog, posing as a cat, say?
This may be troublesome, kind of like ‘self declaring’.
Wrong. My son’s K9 had a badge/number and was considered a law enforcement officer/official. And my son would have shot and killed anyone who attacked his dog.
PS: He had special authority to do it. Don’t ask. It’s above your security clearance.
The now deceased perp stabbed a HUMAN BEING and a dog ... and you think stabbing the dog was a greater crime?
Is that what you're saying?
You stab my dog, you’re stabbing me. I hope you’re not allergic to lead.
And I wonder how many of the highly outraged folks on this thread actually read the article.
Likewise, I am amused by those who cannot distinguish, while distinguishing at the same time.
See #28. It’s for you, too.
Please see my #31.
If you don't want to answer the question posed in #28, that's OK. Just say so. Or stand mute.
In TX you can absolutely shoot and kill a person who stabs your dog, because a dog is property, and TX law authorizes the used of deadly force to protect property.
Then you have no damned sense. That or any dog deserves more respect that that piece of trash you are so worried about. But go ahead and posture so we can all see how tough and cold you are.

You got that right, DR. Anyone engaged in an unprovoked attack with a weapon upon man or beast deserves whatever is done to take him/her down. No sympathy whatsoever.
Apparently it is - but I’m done with PC so also would like to know.
